Alhaji demands refund from Christian girlfriend for turning down marriage proposal

60 years old Alhaji Salisu Nuhu on Tuesday dragged his girlfriend of 4 years, Janet Baru to the Magajin Gari Sharia Court II in Kaduna for turning down his marriage proposal.

Nuhu who is already married told the court that Janet had professed her love and pledged to convert to Islam and marry him, only to turn him down after obtaining various sums of money from him.

“I have been dating Janet for four years now and each time I visit her, I normally give her N1,000 or N2,000 and I have never touched her .

“Her friend Juliet asked me to give Janet N40,000 to show my seriousness about marriage, but I was able to give her N30,000”, he said.

He explained that he declined Janet's request for him to meet her people in Benue State, adding that he instead paid N5000 transport fare for her brother to come to Kaduna for discussion about the marriage.

He added that he gave Janet N45,000 for Christmas along with a clothing material worth N8,000 and extra N2,000 for sewing.

He therefore, begged the court to help him to retrieve all the monies the respondent had obtained from him.

In her defence, Janet said they had only dated for one year. She however admitted receiving only N75,000 from the complainant.

She also told the court that she could not refund the money to Nuhu because he gave it to her as a gift and not as dowry.

The Presiding, Musa Sa’ad after hearing from both parties adjourned the matter to July 17 for ruling.
