Outrageous Lives Of Female Captives In Boko Haram Camps

In the past few months, hundreds of women of different ages have been rescued by government forces from Boko Haram captivity.

As camp after camp of the insurgents is sacked, more and more of the women are released. As they breathe the air of freedom, one common thread can be seen running through them.. They all have harrowing tales of woe to tell.

Some of these women share their stories in this encounter with LEADERSHIP's Kareem Haruna.

Some five months ago, troops of the Nigeria Army had made several rescue operations during raids of camps around Sambisa forest , and of the over 400 of the women that were helped to regain freedom, 214 of them, according to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) data, were found to have been in various stages of pregnancy for unknown Boko Haram ‘husband's."

Just recently, soldiers of the 7 Division of the Nigeria Army had made yet another rescue of women trapped in villages that fell under the captivity of the Boko Haram terrorists. Some of the women, according to some soldiers that took part in the ‘Lafiya Dole’ counter-insurgency operation, were prevented from joining their fleeing neighbours by the attacking Boko Haram terrorists because they also used them as cannon fodder in times of attacks.

Some of the women who were rescued from Bama axis of Borno state, where Boko Haram insurgents were still holding sway before soldiers moved in to tackle them, said they practically lost all their rights and dignity as women during their captivity in the Boko Haram camps.

A mother of four, Fanna Ali, who is in her mid 20s was very economical with the details of her horrific stay under the guard of Boko Haram.

“I have no words to explain what my children and I went through when Boko Haram took over our village and held us there for over four months. Everyday I cried for myself and my children; but the Boko Haram people….they had no mercy at all…..”, said Fanna trailing off in tears.

“We came from Usmanti village”, she said. “Boko Haram had prevented us from leaving when we heard that other residents of various communities around us had left. We were cut off from everything including medical care and good food. We only depended on what was permitted or given to us by Boko Haram terrorists. It was just some weeks ago that the Boko Haram had to flee as the soldiers came. That was how we were lucky to escape too. I have four children for my husband…but I can’t remember their actual birthdays, because I have recently been finding it difficult remembering things like dates. Some of my children were always having running stomachs; some always cried of body pains. I still have back pains and I am here waiting to be given some medications. "

Zara Modu, a woman in her early 30s said she came from Kijelli, a remote village in Konduga local government area. She also has three children. She said,

“Boko Haram have been troubling us in Kijelli so we had to find a way to escape to Konduga through the help of the soldiers.”

She said one of her children has been ill so bad that he urinates blood.

Modu Musa, a 45-year- old villager said she also made it to Konduga from Fadan village alongside other members of her community.

“We have suffered so much in the hands of Boko Haram who had forcefully kept us in Fadan village. Many attempts by most of our community people to escape to Maiduguri was met with terminal punishments like shooting to death or outright slitting of throats like that of animal. They seized our herds of cattle and goats. They dispossessed us of our food and other valuables. We lived in fear until the soldiers finally came. The Boko Haram terrorists had forced many of our people, especially the youth, to join them in whatever they were doing”.

A pregnant woman in her early 30s, who declined mentioning her name, said even if she was to deliver her baby, she would be in fresh dilemma of trying to identify who the real father was.

“Maybe God has destined that I will end up being pregnant for people I don’t know”, said the woman in tears. “I lost my husband to Boko Haram and now I am pregnant for people I never knew…they used women as if we were animals and they gave us crumbs or scraps when they cared to feed us from what they ate…”

Yagana Yurahim, said she became a captive of the Boko Haram for three months after the insurgents had invaded their hamlet near Yale village in Konduga Local Government area, killing some men that refused to follow them to fight soldiers.

“After killing our men and forcing some of our young boys to go, some of them were asked to remain behind and watch over the women and children”, said Yagana, who is in her early 40s.

“Some of the women that attempted running were killed, while others were lucky to escape unhurt. We were all scared of running because the terrorists had warned that they would kill us if we attempt running. They would gather us in a house and one of them would be forcing us to learn how read Quran.”

“Our luck came when the soldiers came attacking. They all abandoned us and fled; that was how the soldiers came in and took us to Maiduguri."

Prominent Northerners Want To Reverse Our Gains - Army

The Army said it has detected plans by certain prominent elements from the northeast to scuttle the ongoing war on terror.

Army spokesman Col Sani Usman said that some people were bent on reversing the gains of the fight against the militant group, Boko Haram. He said that the mischief makers were engaging the services of nongovernmental organizations and marabouts to perpetrate their unwholesome plans.

He warned that the Army was aware of those planning to sabotage its efforts and would not hesitate to deal with them.

His words ;
“The Nigerian Army wishes to inform the public and send a very strong warning to some prominent individuals and political groups who hail from Borno State in particular and North-East generally, that there is information of plans by some highly placed individuals and political groups to scuttle the fight against terrorism and insurgency in this country.

“The unscrupulous individuals and their cohorts are determined to reverse the gains made and scuttle our efforts of achieving the Presidential directive to defeat Boko Haram terrorists within three months. They are enlisting the services of some non-governmental organisations in this grand design.

“It has come to our knowledge that they are employing every means to see that our operation does not succeed in order for them to continue to enjoy certain benefits.

“It has been revealed that they are employing the services of   marabouts and other unethical means in order to frustrate our efforts and the operations in addition to campaign of calumny.

“We are aware of their clandestine meetings and other diabolical efforts to achieve their nefarious aims. This would not be tolerated.

“Therefore, such individuals and groups should be warned in unmistakable terms that anyone found would be dealt with accordingly.”

African Pilgrims Didn't Cause Hajj Stampede - NAHCON

The Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, NAHCON, has rejected the insinuations in certain quarters that the stampede which led to the death of over 700 pilgrims in Mina, near Mecca was triggered by African pilgrims.

Barrister Abdullahi Mukhtar said at a news conference in Mecca, Saudi Arabia that it is unfair for anyone to blame Africans taking part in the pilgrimage for the tragic incident.

His words :
“At this time of electronic age and the close circuit cameras installed in Mecca and environment, the authorities can easily know how the stampede started and what caused it."

He however urged the pilgrims to abide by the time tables provided by the Saudi authorities to forestall a reoccurrence of the ugly incident.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, three Nigerians have been confirmed to be among those who died in the stampede.

Some Pilgrims With African Nationalities Caused Hajj Stampede - Saudi Prince

According to official accounts, 717 persons died while 863 others were injured in a stampede that occurred in Mina, near Mecca as over two million pilgrims were taking part in the ritual to throw stones at the devil.

Already, Nigeria is confirmed to have lost two illustrious citizens in the most tragic event to have occurred during Hajj in more than two decades. They are Prof Tijani El-Miskin of the University of Maiduguri and editor and girl child rights campaigner, Bilkisu Yusuf.

While Saudi Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Nayef has ordered an investigation into the incident, a number of reasons are being speculated to have caused the sudden chaos that led to the tragedy.

While Saudi health minister, Khaled al-Falih, said the stampede occurred because many pilgrims moved “without respecting the timetables” established by authorities, Iran's head of Hajj Commission, Said Omahi has a contrary view.

The head of Iran’s Hajj organisation, Said Omahi , told Iranian news agency, Irna, that two paths close to the scene of the incident had been inexplicably closed off by the Saudi authorities, resulting in the build-up of pilgrims.

However, the most damning reason so far adduced for this tragic event is the one put forward by the Head of the Central Hajj Committee, Prince Khaled al-Faisal.

He is reported to have told
Saudi-owned al-Arabiya TV that the stampede was caused by
“some pilgrims with African nationalities."

Does that suggest that the pilgrims who moved "without respecting the timetables" set by the authorities are the "pilgrims with African nationalities"?

Aunt From Hell Abducts Sister's 3 Children, Sells 2

The police in Abuja recently paraded before the public, six members of a child trafficking syndicate. Prominent among them was a medical doctor and a certain Faith Nuhu who abducted three of her own sister's children and sold two to the group.

Faith reportedly abducted the three children Grace Musa Idris,  13 years, Philip Musa Idris, 3 years and Paul Musa Idris from their home in Kafachan, Kaduna State on the pretext of going to buy them biscuits from a nearby shop.

However, Faith quickly took the children to a bus station where they boarded a vehicle to Owerri in far away Imo State.

As the journey progressed, Faith cleverly abandoned 13-year-old Grace along the way, apparently for asking too many questions. This action later became Faith's undoing as passers-by who saw Grace wandering took her to a nearby police station where operatives contacted her parents and began the search for her siblings.

By the time the police grabbed Faith, she had already sold the other two children for six hundred thousand naira to one Evelyn Ojiaku who runs an illegal maternity home in Owerri, Imo State.

Investigations revealed that Faith Nuhu had earlier sold her own day old baby to Evelyn Ojiaku whose Royal Maternity Clinic is located along Okigwe road for one hundred thousand naira.

Members of the syndicate paraded at the Police Force Headquarters, Abuja are Chigozie Goodwill, Mrs. Evelyn Ojiaku, John Ojiaku, Elizabeth Onyemaobi, and Dr. Amadi Godwin Uzoma.

That Sylvester Ajayi May Walk Again

For 32 years when he served Nigeria at the Federal Housing Authority (FHA), Mr. Sylvester Ajayi didn't suffer a major health challenge. But when it was time to undergo tests at the Gwarimpa General Hospital in order to register for the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), the year he retired from the civil service, he was diagnosed with diabetes type 1.

Though he was surprised at the outcome of the diagnosis owing to many years of good health and a lifestyle devoid of high sugar consumption, 62-year-old Ajayi on the advice of his doctor started using drugs to manage diabetes. He also took up light exercises as further advised by his doctor.

However, sometime in January, the man who worked for over three decades as woodsman started feeling weak each time he returned from walking or his light exercise.

Things came to head, when in February, Ajayi felt so weak that he asked his wife Roseline to help him whenever he needed to turn over in bed.

“I knew that something was wrong when sometime in February, he asked me to help him turn over while we were in bed,” Roseline told Abuja Metro  at her Gwarimpa home.

Closely following the difficulty in moving his body in bed was the swelling of his hands and legs. And soon, the Ajayis sought the help of a physiotherapist. After weeks of treatment with no improvement even after the couple had spent almost all their savings, the physiotherapist advised that Ajayi undergoes an MRI scan. But the couple couldn’t only raise N60,000 after months of saving and this was a far cry from the huge sum needed for the test at the State House Clinic, Abuja.

“We had to beg them that we will run around and make it up to N70,000. We told the doctor at the clinic to look at the date my husband was asked to undergo the test and when we finally came. They took mercy on us and conducted the test,” Roseline narrated with much sadness.

The printed result from the MRI scan showed that Mr. Ajayi is suffering from Severe Cervical Spondylosis.  This disease also known as arthritis of the neck has few risk factors like aging, genetic factors and jobs that have to do with vigorous movement of the neck. The former FHA woodsman fits into the first and last risk factors.

For most of his adult life,Ajayi prided himself as a hardworking woodsman who gave his best each time there was work to do.

“I am the kind of person that will work till midnight and be the first to start work by 6am the next day,” he said.

Sadly, now, the man who loved working hard cannot even do basic things like feeding, clothing and bathing himself. His swollen hands and legs lay credence to his wife’s disclosure that she does all of these simple things for her husband.

“As you see him, I am the one that takes him to the bathroom. I feed him and assist him in wearing his clothes,” she said.

Added to spending all of their savings, Mrs. Ajayi has to leave her kiosk to help her husband whenever he needs her, hence their inability to pay their children’s’ school fees. In fact, they find it hard to feed and depend on handouts from friends.

This explains why the Ajayis felt helpless when they were told that they would have to raise a minimum of N2m for the family’s breadwinner to undergo corrective surgery that will make him walk again and be able to provide for them.

“I appeal to Nigerians to come to my aide as we were told that I need no less than N2m to undergo surgery and post surgery treatment at the University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan,” Ajayi pleaded.

He is still upbeat that he has a lot in him to contribute to the development of the country.  He said,
“Aside from being able to fend for my family after my surgery, my dream is to build a school to train woodsmen like me, gardeners, painters and all other handymen to provide quality service in the construction industry. Unlike now when those learning these skills do so at illegal spots in the city and are regularly harassed by FCT officials.”

Boko Haram Attack Baga, Monguno Again

Residents report that Baga and Monguno towns in the northern part of Borno State have come under renewed Boko Haram attacks.

According to a Monguno indigene who went to celebrate the Sallah at home from one of the IDP camps in Maiduguri,
” we learnt that Baga was attacked at about 12 midnight and by 2am, we were attacked at Monguno. I do not know the number of casualties but certainly, many people were killed by the insurgents.”

Ibrahim Mammadu and others who had gone to celebrate Sallah in their home towns had to beat a quick retreat to Maiduguri owing to the attacks.

” We had to trek down from Shagari low cost to Bakasi last night because the soldiers would not allow us to come in with our vehicle following the restriction for Sallah. I do not think this Boko Haram is over as government wants us to believe," he said.

Closure of Two Paths Near Devil Stoning Ritual Caused Saudi Stampede - Omahi

Said Omahi, Head of Iran's Hajj organization has blamed the stampede in Mina, Saudi Arabia that killed 717 persons and injured 863 others yesterday on the closure of two of the paths near the site of the Stoning of the devil ritual.

His speech on state television which was monitored by Associated Press revealed that the closure left only three routes to the devil stoning site.

However, Saudi Arabia Interior Ministry has said that the stampede may have been caused by two waves of pilgrims meeting at an intersection.

Ministry spokesman Major General Mansour al-Turki said high temperatures and fatigue could also have contributed to the disaster, the deadliest event to afflict the Hajj pilgrimage in more than two decades.

Troops Destroy Boko Haram Fuel Dump

Information emanating from the Nigerian Army indicate that soldiers fighting insurgency in the Northeast have discovered and destroyed a major fuel storage facility used by Boko Haram terrorists.

The Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col Sani Usman said in a statement he released on Thursday that soldiers discovered the fuel dump at Ladu Bumbawa Ward of Guzamala Local Government Area of Borno State.

He noted that the insurgents had earlier captured seven persons at Gajere, namely the Chief Imam and some ward heads and their deputies. They had kept them at a location where they also stored fuel.

It was three of the captives who were able to escape that led the troops to the facility.

“Following a tip off by well meaning citizens, troops of 3 Division yesterday swooped on and dismantled a Boko Haram fuel dump located at Ladu Dumbawa ward, Guzamala Local Government Area of Borno State.

“Suspected Boko Haram terrorists had abducted seven persons in Gajare and took them to the same location. Those kidnapped were three local ward heads called ‘Lawani’ and their respective deputies, as well as the Chief Imam of the town.

“However, through sheer guts and bravery, three of them escaped and reported the matter to the security agents, which led to the rescue of the rest and discovery of the well-concealed terrorists’ fuel depot which was later destroyed by troops.

“The troops have further blocked the terrorists’ supply route that led to Babangida in Tarmuwa Local Government Area of Yobe State, where they mostly get the supplies.”

He also said that efforts are ongoing to knockout all the supply routes of the militants to hasten their defeat.

The ensuing melee led to the Emir of Ilorin abandoning his annual message while the Imam also could not deliver his sermon.

According to NAN, Saraki's security details were forced to fire shots in the air and deploy tear gas, causing worshippers to scatter in different directions.

Kwara State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Ajayi Okasanmi told newsmen that the trouble was started by hoodlums who wanted to extort Sallah gifts from the Senate President.

He added that arrests have already been made.

The Senate Has Integrity Problem Under Saraki - Ex Minister

The continued stay of Dr Bukola Saraki as Senate President is hurting the integrity of the upper chamber.

This is the opinion of a former Minister of State for Education, Mr Kenneth Gbagi. He called on the Senate President to resign in the light of corruption charges preferred against him by the Federal Government at the Code of Conduct Tribunal.

Gbagi who spoke with pressmen in Abuja on Wednesday said that with Saraki as Senate President, the public will not have confidence in any actions taken by the upper house.

The ex Minister and one time Legal Aide Council Chairman said ;
“We have a problem in Nigeria where we don’t have people of honor, dignity and integrity. The mere fact that the Senate President has lied by doing anticipatory declaration indicates that he has no business being a senate president living with tax payers money.

“Nigerians will not have faith in anything that comes out of his senate that is shared or presented by that   kind of person. The entire international community will not believe in the passage of any Bill under his leadership.

“He (Saraki) cannot be seen to sit in that house now as Senate President because whatever he does questions the integrity of the entire senate."

Troops Capture Boko Haram Commander, Rescue 241

Insurgent group Boko Haram suffered a major loss on Wednesday when Nigerian troops captured one of its key commanders, Bulama Modu along with 43 other fighters.

Col Usman disclosed that arms and ammunitions, including bows and arrows were discovered from Bulama Modu who confessed that he sometimes used a horse to carry out his attacks. He however did not say whether the horse was recovered or not.

He noted that some of the insurgents had buried their weapons in the sand as they fled from the superior fire power of Nigeria's Special Forces.

His words :
“Please recall that yesterday, advancing troops along Banki axis made tremendous progress in which they cleared two Boko Haram terrorist camps at Jangurori and Bulatori villages.

“Apart from arms and ammunition, bows and arrows recovered from Bulama Modu, the kingpin, he confirmed that the terrorists also gave him a horse to enhance his deadly pursuits.”

I Want To State That I Am Not Guilty - Saraki Tells Tribunal

“I am the Senate President and I have respect for the rule of law. Mr. Chairman, I observed that they have made reference to the good work the Senate has done in the administration of criminal justice. If there is an allegation of false declaration of assets, the Code of Conduct Bureau shall refer the person involved to the tribunal after giving the person an opportunity to explain if the facts are true. But in this case, I was not given the opportunity.

“I thought the CCB should have called me and given me the right to fair hearing. I am hearing about the charges for the first time. We are all here and the whole world is watching when we said we are in new Nigeria. I want to state here that I am not guilty.”

After the theatrics that preceded his entry into the dock on Tuesday, Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki gave the above lecture to the Code of Conduct Tribunal before taking his plea.

After the defense counsel's argument that the tribunal lacked the powers to entertain the matter had been countered by the prosecution counsel, the Chairman of the tribunal, Justice Danladi Umar ruled that he had jurisdiction over the case. His words.

“It is in the view of the tribunal that the trial before it is criminal in nature and it has jurisdiction over criminal matters. The defendant should therefore proceed to the dock.”

As Saraki grumbled his way to the dock, he wondered why the tribunal had chosen to be ignorant of the conditions under which an accused could be brought to trial.

There Is Still Hope For Chibok Girls - Army Chief.

Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Tukur Buratai on Monday assured that the Chibok Girls would be rescued. More than 200 girls were abducted at night from their hostel in Chibok High School in April 2014 as they prepared for their final exams. A few later escaped but the majority have remained in captivity ever since.

Gen Buratai gave the assurance while addressing newsmen at the Third Quarter Conference of the Chief of Army Staff which took place at the Army Headquarters in Abuja.

He maintained that while the military has a fair idea of their location within Sambisa forest, the safe return of the girls remains the priority.

His words ;
“The issue of the Chibok girls is very crucial. We are making all efforts to clear the terrorists and after clearing them we rescue the Chibok girls in one piece. I believe that the girls must be somewhere within the general area of the forest but we are not yet sure exactly where they are but as soon as this is confirmed we will attempt to see what we can do to bring them back in one piece. It is very crucial because their safety is very important.

“They could be somewhere else, so we are taking this issue in piecemeal so that we are sure of where we are and how we are going about it and we believe that we can find a solution to it very soon."

He added that the Army is working together with the Air Force and the Department of State Services to achieve the objective.

Voice In Latest Boko Haram Audio Belongs To Adamu, Not Shekau - Buratai

The latest audio recording of terror group, Boko Haram has been described by the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Tukur Buratai as a desperate attempt by the insurgents to find relevance.

He disclosed that the voice claiming to be Abubakar Shekau in the recording which called President Buhari and his military chiefs liars belongs to a certain Adamu.

He said,
“I think the new Boko Haram leader, in the latest audio is just trying to sound relevant but as far as I am concerned he is irrelevant in the scheme of things, he is irrelevant to me.

“ Have you seen any of them coming out apart from the suicide bombings? You can see the number of terrorists that are escaping from their camps; he is just making noise to remain relevant."

Sunday's Bomb Blasts Among Boko Haram's Last - Army Chief.

Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Tukur Buratai has assured that Sunday's bomb blasts in Maiduguri will be among the last acts of Boko Haram as they have provided the military clues about their remaining areas of operation.

He urged the residents to remain calm as measures were being intensified to prevent a reoccurrence.

Buratai stressed that Sunday's bomb blasts "will be among those that will be the last. You can be counting them. They have opened up another window where we can now focus on where these attacks are coming from.

“It will not be possible for them to penetrate other areas, for now we have knocked them off areas along from Yobe and some parts of Borno.

“Immediately this incident happened, I gave a directive and we will comb that area thoroughly to identify where they are operating from.’’

Drama At Tribunal As Senate President Refuses To Be Docked

A drama ensued on Tuesday morning in Abuja at the Code of Conduct Tribunal sitting as Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki initially refused to enter the dock to answer to the 13-count corruption charge preferred against him by the Federal Government of Nigeria.

The trial had begun at 10.32 am but Saraki succumbed to the wish of the tribunal to mount the dock at 11. 24 am.

Following the Senate President's refusal to stand up when his case was mentioned, Tribunal Chairman Justice Danladi Umar insisted that he should leave his seat and enter the dock.

When Saraki who was sandwiched by friends and colleagues called the bluff of the tribunal by remaining seated, Justice Umar queried ;

“Where is the prosecution?  Is the accused person here?”  Meanwhile he was looking directly at Saraki from his elevated position.

Prosecution Counsel, Mr Rotimi Jacobs answered immediately;
“My Lord, I cannot see him. I think the right thing is for him to enter the dock first, then we will announce our appearances. Thereafter, the charges will be read to him."

But defence counsel, Mr J B. Daudu had a contrary opinion.
“With profound respect to the chairman and member of this tribunal, I disagree with my learned brother that we should enter appearances first. The order of this tribunal was that the accused should be produced today. It was not for him to enter his plea. The case was earlier adjourned for mention,” he argued, citing an Appeal Court decided case  in Igbeke vs FRN, ‎2015, 3 Nigerian Weekly Law Report, NWLR.

Eventually, Dr Saraki reluctantly mounted the dock to enter a plea of "I want to say that I am not guilty" after complaining that the tribunal did not give him a chance to rectify the anomalies in his assets declaration forms.

As I Appear Before The Code of Conduct Tribunal - By Senate President Saraki

See the statement Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki released after his appearance before the Code of Conduct Tribunal in Abuja on Tuesday.

“Today, I appeared before the Code of Conduct Tribunal for the commencement of my trial in a case concerning the asset declaration form I filled in 2003 after I have explored the opportunity to defend my fundamental human rights in other courts.

“My appearance in court today once again demonstrates my belief in the rule of law and respect for the judiciary of our country.

“As I stated while taking the plea in the case, I reiterate my belief that the only reason why I am going through this trial is because I am Senate President. If I were to be just a Senator, I doubt if anybody will be interested in the asset declaration form I filled over twelve years ago.

“This belief stems from the fact that Section 3 (d) of the Code of Conduct  Bureau and Tribunal Act provides that If there is a breach or non-compliance with any section of the law, the person involved should be given the opportunity to either admit or deny and that in the case of a written admission, no reference to the Tribunal shall be necessary. So, If the CCB had followed the guidelines, procedure or the due process provided in its own law, we won’t be having this trial.

“It is my humble opinion that this case is a vivid example that there is still flagrant disregard for due process in our polity. This trial is not only being observed by Nigerians alone, the international community is watching because Nigeria is a key member of this community. So, the executive, legislature and judiciary should  do the right thing that will truly demonstrate that we have imbibed the spirit of positive change.

“It is however necessary for me to thank my colleagues in the Senate for the solid support and solidarity they  demonstrated for me. I also thank my counsel for the brilliance they have shown in  presenting our case and the supporters who were present in the Tribunal in their hundreds. I want to assure you that I am innocent of all the charges and will clear my name in due course.

“May God continue to bless our country.”

Treasury Single Account Records Over 66% Compliance - FG

About 600 out of the 900 federal Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs have so far complied with President Muhammadu Buhari's directive on Treasury Single Account, TSA.

The Federal Government had set September 15th as the deadline for all MDAs to comply with the new policy which seeks to eliminate corruption by ensuring that all monies belonging to Federal Government's institutions are kept in unified accounts under the Central Bank of Nigeria.

According to the Accountant General of the Federation, Alhaji Ahmed Idris, who gave an update on the exercise shortly after the month’s Federation Account Allocation Committee meeting,  the process was slow at the beginning owing to teething problems.

He said that in spite of initial challenges, the Federal Government has recorded a huge success with the exercise. He added that while 600 MDAs had fully complied with the directive, others are still at different stages of compliance.

He also said that contrary to stories making the rounds that some MDAs were exempted from the exercise, the Federal Government had not excluded any of its agencies from complying with the directive.

His words:
“The TSA is in place and there is a clear cut directive from the government that all MDAs without exception must comply.

“My office is working closely to enlist and enroll MDAs so that they can be able to access and utilize their resources. This policy is to make all MDAs to be effective and operational."

How Senate President Reacted To The Warrant For His Arrest.

The Code of Conduct Tribunal yesterday in Abuja issued a bench warrant for the arrest of Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki for failing to appear before it to answer charges of false declaration of assets.

See Saraki's reaction in this statement issued by his spokesman, Mr Yusuf Olaniyonu.

“Following the development in the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) today, Friday, September 18, 2015 when the Tribunal chose to ignore the subsisting order of a Federal High Court by sitting, we hereby state our position as follows:

“While the Senate President, Dr.Abubakar Bukola Saraki, has stated and maintains that he is ready to submit himself to due process of the law on any issue concerning him, he also believes he has an inalienable right to resort to the same judiciary for protection when he feels his fundamental rights are about to be infringed upon.

“It is for this reason that Dr. Saraki, having satisfied himself that the case filed by the CCB and the manner in which the case was filed show that he will not be given justice, resorted to the Federal High Court for the determination of the issues of competence of the prosecutor as well as compliance with the procedure stipulated in the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act.

“The Federal High Court on Thursday, September 17, 2015, therefore ordered that all parties in the case should appear before it on Monday, September 21, 2015. The implication of this ruling by a Court of competent jurisdiction is that the sitting today has been overtaken by event. It is for this reason that Dr. Saraki chose to go about his normal official schedule.

“Today at the Tribunal, Counsel to the Senate President, Mr. M. A. Mahmud (SAN), raised a motion stating that there is a pending constitutional matter before the Federal High Court to be decided on Monday and that the Tribunal should halt the trial until the constitutional matter is disposed of.

“We are however dismayed that the Tribunal chose to disregard the order of the Federal High Court and the motion to suspend hearing till Monday when all parties are expected to argue their positions on the constitutional matter.“It is also a surprise to us that despite the application by the lead counsel to the Senate President that he will produce Dr. Saraki on Monday and the personality of the person involved as the number three man in the country, the Tribunal insisted on ( a warrant of arrest as if its intention is simply to embarrass Dr. Saraki.

“We are not unmindful of the fact that the Tribunal is acting under political influence and external pressure. This is dangerous to our democracy. The conduct of the Tribunal today left nobody in doubt that it cannot do justice on the matter before it.

“It is also clear that today’s decision is an abuse of the rule of law which portends danger to our judicial system.

“The Tribunal has equally set a bad precedent in the way and manner it conducted itself during the proceedings.

“We want to emphasise the fact that this is not part of any war against corruption but using state institutions to fight political opponents and seeking to achieve through the back door what some people cannot get through democratic process.

“We need to caution here that in a desperate bid to settle political scores and nail imaginary enemies, we should not destroy our democratic institutions and heat the polity for selfish reasons. Let us all learn from history.”

Tribunal Orders Arrest Of Senate President

The Code of Conduct Tribunal presided over by Justice Danladi Umar yesterday in Abuja issued a bench warrant for the arrest of Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki for failing to appear before it to answer charges of false declaration of assets preferred against him by the Code of Conduct Bureau.

“The accused is expected to respect the summon of this court and respect the constitution which he has sworn to protect as a senior citizen of this country.

“I hereby order a bench warrant to be issued on the defendant. The IGP and other relevant security agencies are to produce him in court on the next adjourned date. Northern Group Demands Resignation Of Senate President

Embattled Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki has been called upon to resign from office. Making the call in Abuja on Friday, the Northern Ethnic Nationalities Unity Congress, NENUC said that Saraki was dragging the office of the Senate President in the mud.

The call came on the heels of the bench warrant issued by the Code of Conduct Tribunal , CCT for the arrest of the Senate President over allegations of false declaration of assets dating back to 2003.

In a chat with newsmen yesterday, the National President of NENUC, Mr Bako Benjamin said that the group found it disgusting that Dr Saraki has chosen to seek court protection rather than come before the tribunal to clear his name.

He urged the Senate President to present himself before the Code of Conduct Tribunal as seeking to hide under court protection is an admission of guilt.

His words ;
“Let the Senate President come to equity with clean hands. Let him defend himself against all the charges levelled against him in the spirit of the new wind of change blowing across the country.

“Seeking protection from the law courts is sending a strong signal that he (Saraki) has something to hide.”

NENUC went on to give Saraki three days to resign from office as Senate President. Bako Benjamin said the group will initiate impeachment proceedings against Saraki if he fails to heed the call.
