Treasury Looters To Face Prosecution In a Few Weeks

“Those who have stolen the national wealth will be in court in a matter of weeks and Nigerians will know those who have short-changed them,”

These are the words of President Muhammadu Buhari. He spoke on Tuesday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja during a meeting with the National Peace Council. The group was led by former military ruler, Gen Abdulsalam Abubakar.

The president emphasized his government's irrevocable commitment to ending the vicious cycle of corruption, unemployment and insecurity in the country. He said that his government has been collating the facts and figures of Nigeria's stolen funds and will not stop at recovering such funds, but will also prosecute the offenders.

The National Peace Council while commending the President's anti-corruption crusade, urged him to be guided by the rule of law.

Punch reports that members of the National Peace Council, (formally National Peace Committee) at the meeting were the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar; Cardinal John Onaiyekan; President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor; and the Primate of the Anglican Church of Nigeria, Archbishop Nicholas Okoh.
Others were Justice Rose Ukeje (retd), Prof. Ameze Guobadia, Publisher of
Vanguard Newspapers, Sam Amuka; a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Priscilla Kuye; Senator Ben Obi, Dr. Yunusa Tanko and Dr Arthur-Martin Aginam.

Armed Robbers Attack Ordinary Ahmed

On air personality and founder of Brekete Family radio show, Ordinary Ahmed Isa was last week visited in his Abuja home by men of the underworld.

The armed robbers who beat up Ordinary Ahmed's wife made away with several mobile phones and an unspecified sum of money with which he intended to pay for the treatment of a kidney patient.

Speaking about the incident on his Brekete Family radio show, Ordinary Ahmed said that the robbery attack came after he had announced on air that he had raised some money to help the patient pay for kidney transplant. He appealed to the armed robbers to return the money.

Buhari Sets Up Corruption Committee

To tackle deep-rooted corruption and mismanagement of public resources, President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed a 7-man committee to fine tune anti-corruption strategies and advice him on how to reform the legal system.

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adeshina said in Abuja on Monday that the committee is to advise the president on how to prosecute the war on corruption and implement necessary reforms in the country's criminal justice system

Nigeria is believed to have lost over $150b to corruption in the last decade.

Nigeria Is A Poor Country - Buhari

It is a mistake to classify Nigeria as a rich country. So says President Muhammadu Buhari. His reason is that the indices for measuring wealthy nations do not place the country in that class.

He said that when parameters like economic advancement and social services are considered, Nigeria comes across as a poor country.

The president spoke when he hosted the outgoing President of the African Development Bank, Dr Donald Kaberuka and some of his colleagues in Abuja.
He called on affluent and influential Nigerians to do more to rescue the country from economic and security challenges.

He also called on the AfDB to extend more support to the country in the agricultural sector so as to help her reduce unemployment.

2015 Hajj : FG Won't Sponsor Any Delegates

The Federal Government will not be sponsoring any delegates to the Hajj in Saudi Arabia this year.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu who disclosed this on Monday, said the decision was not targeted at any group or individual. Government will save over $1m by this decision.

The presidential spokesman said that government will still play it's other roles of providing medical, consular and security services to the pilgrims.

IG Implores Public To Support Police With Info

The Inspector General of Police, Mr Solomon Arase wants Nigerians to provide relevant information to the police to help improve the country's security situation. He made the call at a dinner organized in his honor by his university course mates in Abuja.

They said they would use the opportunity provided by the moment to see how they could help one of their own succeed in his onerous assignment.

Mr Arase promised to tap into their wealth of experience to improve the operational efficiency of the police with particular emphasis on respect for the rights of citizens.

The dinner turned out to be a reunion for Political Science students of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, class of 1980.

Lagdo Dam: Cameroun Alerts Nigeria.

Cameroonian authorities have alerted Nigeria that they plan to release excess water from Lagdo dam in August. The activity is expected to cause flooding along the banks of River Benue.

The alert called for immediate evacuation of communities along the River Benue. In a similar situation in 2012, houses and farmlands along the river were submerged, causing several deaths and billions of naira in damages.

Alarm bells are also ringing from Niger Republic from where a large volume of water is expected to flow into the River Niger, posing similar threats
