Reps Committee To Probe $470m Abuja, Lagos CCTV Projects

The House of Representatives on Thursday set up an ad hoc committee to revisit the abandoned Abuja Lagos Close Circuit Television contract.

The contract for the $470m project was awarded to the Chinese firm ZTE Corporation in 2010.

The decision of the Lower Chamber of the National Assembly is coming on the heels of devastating bomb attacks on Kuje and Nyanya, two suburbs of the Abuja Federal Capital Territory.

The previous House of Representatives have investigated the same projects and produced a report which did not elicit any action from the Federal Government.

Moving the motion for a fresh investigation into the projects, Hon Adesegun Adekoya recalled that the CCTV projects were meant to “facilitate real time communication between security agencies to enhance their capacities to monitor and nip in the bud any criminal act before it is committed.”

He lamented that with the abandonment of the contract, the goal of the project had been defeated.

It will be recalled that the contract required the down payment of 15 per cent ($70.5m) by the Federal government, while the Chinese EXIM Bank was to pay the balance of 85 per cent ($399.5m) to be repaid within 10 years at the prevailing interest rate.
