“I am here for a routine visit with the Service Chiefs. I have come to appraise the level of performance in the operation and see how we can actually address some issues on the operation.

“The operation is actually to wipe out, to clear Sambisa, that is ‘Operation Clampdown’ is to clear Sambisa of the terrorists.

Counter-insurgency troops from the 22 Brigade Garrison on Sunday, cleared Boko Haram terrorists hiding in the four villages of Cinga, Mallum Maja, Bosuma and Murye in the Northeast.

According to a statement by Army spokesman, Col Sani Usman, three of the insurgents who had been terrorizing the communities were killed while nine others who were hiding inside holes were captured alive.

Several items were recovered during the operation including
"9 Dane guns, 3 machetes, 1 bow with arrows, 6 motor cycles used by the Boko Haram terrorists to ferry slaughtered cow meat to Boko Haram terrorist hideouts."

The statement said that the recovered items were burnt. Other items recovered were 1 tricycle, 4 x Tiger Generators and 1 solar panel.

Usman said that troops also recovered 300 herds of cattle rustled by the Boko Haram terrorists from Fulani herdsmen and handed them over to their rightful owners, while 400 persons held hostage by the terrorists were rescued and set free.

83 cattle, 20 persons killed in Nasarawa gun attacks

No fewer than 20 persons have been killed in Loko, Nasarawa State over the past few weeks.

According to the traditional ruler of Loko, the killings resulted from reprisal attacks from suspected Agatu youths from Benue State.

Over the weekend, suspected Agatu youths also killed 83 cattle  at Adayi in Nasarawa Local Government Area of the state.

Both the Fulani leader of Adayi area of Loko, Mallam Bideri Ahmadu and the monarch of Loko, Alhaji Abubakar Ahmed Sabo suspect that Agatu youths were responsible for the killings.

Mallam Bideri Ahmadu told  newsmen in Loko that Agatu youths crossed over from Benue State about 10:30am last Saturday to perpetrate the latest attacks.

Ahmadu alleged that Agatu youths had wanted to rustle some cattle across River Benue, "but the cattle went berserk because of sporadic shootings.

“Upon realising they could not achieve their aim, the Agatu youths opened fire on the cows, killing 83. The injured ones are in the bush," he said.

Confirming the attacks, the spokesman of Nasarawa State Police Command, Ismaila Numan said his men were investigating the killings of 83 cattle by suspected hoodlums.

He added that there has been tension in the area since the massacre of 300 persons in Agatu by suspected Fulani herdsmen.

Those behind Enugu, Agatu killings should be treated like criminals - Sultan

The Sultan of Sokoto, ) Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar has said that those behind the destruction and killings in some Enugu, Benue and Nasarawa State communities are criminals and should be treated as such.

Sultan Abubakar who is also the President-General of Jama’atu Nasril Islam, JNI called for thorough investigations into the killings so as to fish out and punish the perpetrators.

The Sultan expressed his views in a statement signed by the
Secretary-General of Jama’atu Nasril Islam, Dr. Khalid Abubakar Aliyu.

He however, regretted that ethno-religious coloration is being ascribed to the criminal activities in some quarters.

“Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) received with great shock and deep concern the news of incessant killings and maiming of innocent lives and the destruction of public and private properties. Of particular concern are the brutal murders of people in Agatu-Benue state, Nnibo-Enugu state and some parts of Nasarawa state. It is indeed alarming that within few weeks, deadly attacks were reportedly unleashed while the perpetrators go un-arrested.

“JNI therefore condemns in strong terms these repeated heinous attacks and once again calls on the relevant security agencies to brace up to the trends, in order to put a stop to this ugly tide, as human lives are sacred and must be seen to be treated as so.

“JNI and indeed all Nigerians, view the fall out of these repeated attacks, particularly the taking up of arms against other citizens as another trend of insecurity that portends grave danger to the Nation. We must not forget so soon the adverse effect of the so called Boko Haram group, that claimed the lives of many thousands innocent lives.

“Hundreds have been abducted, the males forced into insurgency and the females into slavery. Millions more are wallowing in Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps in Nigeria and in Refugee Camps in neighbouring countries. Public and private properties worth trillions of Naira have been destroyed.

“We therefore call for a thorough investigation by appropriate agencies in order to fish out the evil perpetrators, bring them to justice and forestall re-occurrence. The repeated heinous acts of attacks are crimes against the citizenry and the perpetrators are therefore criminals and must be treated so.

“It is indeed absurd and most unfortunate that certain groups or people ascribe the incidents on ethnic and/or religious premise and to whimsically apportion blame in order to batter the gradual restoration of peace and security in Nigeria. Well, the Commissioner of Police, Enugu State has debunked the rumours, likewise the Inspector General of Police has also debunked the insinuations over those being blamed.

“We must thus be cautious of packaging crimes on religious and ethnic garments. Crimes are abominable and whoever commits them is criminal. Security agencies should brace up in being proactive and utilize maximally intelligence reports in order to nip-in the bud possible eruptions of security problems within and around communities.

“Painfully, His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General, JNI, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, on behalf of Nigerian Muslims, condoles the families of those who lost their lives and sympathies with all affected victims, and also calls for concerted introspection and commitment by relevant agencies to take proactive and effective measures in addressing this pernicious problem."

Labour demands Buhari's blueprint for job creation

The Nigeria Labour Congress has asked the Buhari administration to produce the  blueprint for the creation of the three million jobs annually contained in its manifesto.

President of the NLC, Comrade Ayuba Wabba while speaking at the 2016 May Day celebration reminded President Buhari that Nigeria was bleeding and needed strong measures to revive the ailing economy.

“We have persistently pointed out, there is hardly any household in Nigeria where there aren’t at least two or more unemployed persons who have graduated from various tiers of our educational system, looking for job placement for upward of three to five years.

“The ruling APC government in its manifesto promised to create three million jobs annually. We have waited one year for the government to bring out its blueprints on how it intends to go about achieving this.

“Congress will seek audience with Mr. President to get more information on this important matter. On our part as workers, we will be prepared and willing to contribute to any effort to create a ‘Job Creation Fund,’ nationally to tackle this problem.

“Our worry as organized labour is that if no concrete convictions are secured in the many corruption trials going on, between now and the next 12-15months, those who have stolen these huge fortunes will start feeling that they can outlive the Buhari Presidency, and return to a regime of “business as usual” as far as corruption is concerned.

“Unless the unfinished reforms started with the partial implementation of the Justice Mohammed Uwais’ electoral reform committee are completed, we see dangers ahead.

“Among these reforms waiting to be implemented is the establishment of the Electoral Offences Commission.

“For us in organized labour, unless our politicians know that there is real possibility that their electoral rascalities carry real penalties of jail terms or long term disqualification from contesting for public offices, the type of disgraceful mayhem witnessed during the recent election in Rivers and other states would continue unabated.

“Similarly, unless we fine-tune the procedure for the appointment of the chairman and key officers of the electoral management body as recommended in the Justice Uwais report, the current progress made in the independence and operations of INEC are not irreversible.”
