Beggars and street hawkers in Kaduna State on Wednesday took to the streets to protest last week's signing into law of the Anti-begging Bill by Governor Nasir El-Rufai.
The protesters told newsmen at the NUJ Secretariat in Kaduna that the governor must reverse the law within seven days or they would be forced to occupy the Government House.
The beggars had among them, different kinds of disabled persons including cripples, the deaf, the blind among others.
The Chairman of Concerned Citizens with Disabilities, Julius Shemang while speaking on behalf of the protesters said that the passage of the street begging and hawking bill without palliatives measures was not in tune with the agreement the beggars earlier reached with the state government.
“We are therefore writing to register our concern before you and the state House of Assembly that the signing and passage of the Street Begging and Hawking Bill that is not in line with Article 4 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities will create more hardship for our members.
“Before the 2015 general elections you mentioned during your campaign that if elected as governor of the state you will make life comfortable for our members by signing our bill with a commission. This has not been done and we will continue the strike until the governor accedes to our request,” he said.
