Govt Bans Street Trading Of Foreign Currencies In Abuja

Hawking hard currencies on the streets of Abuja is now illegal. Offenders will also be  prosecuted.

The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Mr John Chukwu was at the popular Zone 4 foreign exchange black market in Wuse yesterday to speak to the traders.

He said that hawking money on the streets was against the Abuja master plan and Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) regulations. He advised the foreign exchange traders who wanted to remain in business to obtain CBN license and acquire proper offices.

The Abuja authorities' action may have been partly informed by security concerns as most of the traders are known to operate from shanties.

The Permanent Secretary directed Commissioner of Police, Mr Wilson Inalegwu, who chairs the Abuja Task Force in on City Cleaning to enforce the ban on street trading of hard currencies.
