The police on Tuesday arraigned a hotel attendant, Danladi Sule, 31 in Mararaba Upper Area Court, Nasarawa State for allegedly deceiving his girlfriend that he would marry her.
The prosecutor, Inspector Joseph Ahua told the court that Rabiat Tijani, a girlfriend to the accused reported the matter at the A Division Police Station, Mararaba on July 1.
Ahua said that sometime in 2005, the accused approached the complainant for marriage, to which she consented. He further alleged that the accused deceived the complainant to move in and live with him as a wife.
They started living together in 2005. The accused impregnated her, and she had two children for him .Then he abandoned her in the village with the children, only to come to Mararaba and marry another woman. According to the prosecutor, the accused is presently living with the other woman Kabayi in Mararaba, Nasarawa State.
He said the offences of deceitful marriage and cruelty to children which the accused committed contravened sections 238 and 383 of thePenal Code. Section 383 prescribes a three-year jail term as penalty for offenders
Sule however denied committing the offence. The accused counsel, Mr Prince Nwagbokwu prayed the court to grant his client bail, stressing that he would not jump bail.
The Presiding Judge, Vincent Gwehemba granted bail to the accused in the sum of N50,000.00 with one surety in like sum and adjourned the case till July 14 for further hearing.
