Wada to name building after Audu before handover

Governor Idris Wada of Kogi State has declared that he would name a public building after his opponent in the last governorship election, the late Prince Abubakar Audu.

Wada said that the measure was to immortalize Audu who was the first executive governor of Kogi State for his massive contributions to the creation and subsequent development of the state.

Gov Wada made the declaration at the Government House, Lokoja on Friday, while giving account of his stewardship ahead of the handover to governor-elect Bello on January 27.

While giving his administration a pass mark, Wada listed some of his achievements as free medical care for the people and improvement of water and electricity supply in the state.

He said that huge wage load was a major challenge to his administration as 85 per cent of the monthly federal allocation was spent on salaries and pensions, leaving very little for development projects.

Metuh should carry his cross alone - PDP

“Metuh didn’t represent the party in the alleged crimes he’s being prosecuted. The party didn’t benefit from the alleged crime.

“So, he is going to look for sureties himself. We won’t be involved. He would carry his own cross alone, without the party being involved.”

Those were the words of the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Abdullahi Jalo when he spoke with The PUNCH correspondent in Abuja on Friday.

Jalo emphasized that since Metuh's alleged offences have nothing to do with the PDP, the party will not be involved in getting sureties to secure his.

Metuh is being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC on a seven-point charge bordering on money laundering and corrupt enrichment.

Specifically, he is alleged to have unlawfully received N400m from the Office of the National Security Adviser, ONSA through his company, Destra Investment Ltd in November 2014.

Although Metuh has admitted receiving the money, he said that it was payment for a job he did for Goodluck Jonathan.

He however did not disclose the type of job he did for the former president.

The PDP spokesman is also facing trial for allegedly destroying a statement he wrote before operatives of the EFCC.

He has been granted bail for both alleged offenses in the total sum of one billion naira.

While Justice Okon Abang of a Federal High Court, Abuja granted Metuh N400m bail in the money laundering case, Justice Ishaq Bello of a Federal Capital Territory High Court admitted him to bail for N600m in the alleged offense of tearing his own statement.

FG won't regulate online publications - Minister

Online publishers in Nigeria have been advised to maintain credibility.

The Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed gave the advice during a meeting with online publishers.

He said that government has no intention to regulate online publications because it believed they are responsible enough to regulate themselves.

“If the online publications suffer credibility problems, they stand the risk of losing the confidence of their readers and the advertisers who provide the lifeblood for the publications’ survival,” he said.

He noted that while the number of online publications would continue to grow, only the credible ones would continue to enjoy the loyalty of their readers and advertisers.

He added that the growth in the number of online publications would help government to bridge the information gap between the government and the people and also help in carrying the citizens along as regards the implementation of policies that affect their lives.

He assured that government would support online publications through advertising.

“All we ask for, in return, is that you provide accurate information to the people, and avoid sensationalism and partisanship.

‘’The National Security Awareness Campaign, aimed at rallying the support of Nigerians for the war on terror, is on-going. Also, the National Sensitisation Campaign against Corruption was formally launched in Abuja on Monday, and it is aimed at rallying Nigerians against the cankerworm of corruption which has eaten deep into the fabric of our society.

“We are also preparing to launch a National Re-orientation Campaign, which is tagged ‘Change Begins With Me’, to achieve a paradigm shift in the way we do things."

Describing the war against corruption as one of the cardinal programmes of the Buhari administration, Mohammed said that no attention paid to corruption could be said to be too much.

“Some have said the government is dwelling too much on the war against corruption to the detriment of other areas of governance. Our response to that is that indeed, there is nothing like dwelling too much on this war, which is a war of survival for our nation.

“The situation is grim, very grim indeed, as far as corruption is concerned. That is why the Federal Government is embarking on this sensitisation campaign. Our approach is not to vilify anyone but to use facts and figures to give Nigerians a sense of the cost of corruption.”

He called on online publishers to support the war against corruption by keeping that Nigerians well informed about how corruption affects their lives.

Dasuki money: 21 persons shared, companies shared N54.65b - Mohammed

According to a statement released by the Ministry of Information in Abuja on Friday, 21 persons and companies fraudulently received N54.65b from the $2.1b arms procurement fund which scandal has been rocking the country since the beginning of the Buhari administration.

The statement said that the Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed made the disclosure while speaking with online publishers in Lagos.

Emphasizing that corruption is the reason why government programs don't make the desired impact, Mohammed said that what 21 individuals and companies got from the arms deal was more than what the Federal Government budgeted for zonal intervention programmes across the country in 2015 by N2.83b.

His words:
“The simple reason is that appropriated funds have ended up in the pockets of a few.

“Whereas the sum of N51.83bn was appropriated for 1,278 projects in the Zonal Intervention Projects for 2015, a total of 21 individuals and companies benefited from the Dasukigate to the tune of N54.66bn as we know so far.

“The implication, therefore, is that the amount received by 21 individuals and companies is more than the 2015 Zonal Intervention Project budget by N2.83bn!

“Furthermore, the value of what beneficiaries of Dasukigate contributed to development is zero, compared to how the lives of Nigerians would have been transformed, poverty reduced and livelihoods improved by the Zonal Intervention Projects which would have cost N2.83bn less than Dasukigate.”

Metuh gets N600m bail in destruction of statement case.

A High Court in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja on Friday granted the incarcerated spokesman of the PDP, Olisa Metuh bail in the sum of N600m.

The PDP spokesman was docked by the EFCC on Thursday on the allegation of tearing the statement he made to operatives of the anti graft agency.

Ruling on the accused's bail application, Justice Ishaq Bello of FCT, Abuja High Court said that he agreed with Metuh's lawyer that his offense is bailable.

He thereafter, fixed February 26 for commencement of trial.

Metuh had earlier in the week been granted N400m bail in a case of money laundering.

Those who shared arms money are sponsors of Boko Haram - Borno Elders

According to Borno Elders Forum, beneficiaries of the controversial dasukigate should be held accountable for sponsoring the Boko Haram insurgency.

The Chairman of the forum
Ambassador Usman Gaji Galtimari said this on Thursday in a statement issued after a meeting in which the elders threw their weight behind President Buhari’s anti-corruption war.

In the statement titled: ‘Beneficiaries of ‘arms deal’ are sponsors of Boko Haram’, the elders said that those who diverted money intended to fund the war against insurgency are Boko Haram sponsors.

“The people who deliberately turned away from their official responsibilities on security issues, or those who looted the funds meant for the prosecution of the war against Boko Haram and those who spoke or continue to speak in their favour are all one and the same.

“They all individually and collectively aided and sponsored the Boko Haram insurgency.

“They colluded to ensure the death of our brave soldiers, our innocent people and the near total destruction of our society. Nigerians should stand by us and collectively assist to bring those responsible to book. It does not speak well of any Nigerian, for whatever reason, to fight or criticise the President of Nigeria or call our anti–corruption agencies names when they simply want to make offenders pay for the crimes most of them have confessed to have committed.

“Those who collected such huge sums of money from the national treasury and converted same for their unending greed and avarice, should be regarded as part and parcel of the sponsors of Boko Haram. Get them and you will get the rest.

“We feel hurt and betrayed that some Nigerians are politicising this despicable issue of arms deal.

“Nigerians should allow the federal government and its relevant agencies to bring to book all those found to be involved in any act of omission or commission,” the statement said.
