FG to end wheat import from Russia

In an apparent effort to shore up its dwindling foreign reserves, the Federal Government has decided to stop the importation of wheat from Russia.

The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Hajiya Khadija Abba-Ibrahim disclosed this in Abuja during the weekend at the end of the fourth Joint Commission meeting between Russia and Nigeria.

She said that Nigeria spent $880 million on wheat imports in 2015 and has already spent $660 million on the commodity this year.

She added that Nigeria would henceforth invite Russians to help  the country modernize its agriculture. .

Her words: “We import a lot of wheat from Russia and we are telling Russia that this has to stop.

“We want the Russian companies and farmers to come to Nigeria to show us how we can grow our agriculture sector with modern technology.”
The Russian delegation was led by Mr Dianov Alexandar Yurievich.
