NCC issues code to protect mobile phone users from unsolicited messages

The Nigerian Communications Commission has issued a directive mandating all mobile network operators to dedicate the short code 2442 on their networks to consumers who do not want unsolicited messages.

The short code is expected to be used by subscribers to opt in to the "do not disturb" database of the mobile network operators.

The NCC said that the directive is intended to protect consumers from unfair practices through the availability of information and education required to make informed choices.

The effective date for compliance to short code 2442 for all mobile networks according to the NCC is 30 June 2016.
