Six suspects flee courtroom as counsel tries to amend charges

Six suspects standing trial at a Karu Chief Magistrate's Court, Abuja on Thursday fled the courtroom after the Judge announced the striking out of the charges against them.

The Magistrate, A. O. Oyeyipo had struck out the case against the six accused persons following an application for substitution of charges by the prosecution counsel, Nne Okon.

However, before the prosecutor could announce that she was substituting charges, the accused persons took to their heels and fled the court.

The accused persons had been standing trial along with three others who are now dead since Nov. 15, 2013, for criminal conspiracy, mischief and forgery, in contravention of Sections 97(2), 327 and 364 of the Penal Code.

The prosecution counsel said that she applied to strike out the old case and re-arraign the suspects on fresh charges since three out of the original nine defendants had died.
