Medicine students now to spend 10 years in Nigerian universities

After a review of the study of Medicine in Nigeria, the National Universities Commission has extended the duration of the course from 7 years to 10 - 11 years.

The decision was disclosed by the Executive Secretary of the NUC, Prof. Julius Okojie at the Matriculation and Inauguration of the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo State.

He said that the decision would help the students to mature psychologically into the profession.

He added that the 2015 reviewed documents for the training of medical students has made provision of 4 years for students to study basic sciences after which they will proceed to the medical school to spend  seven years to study medicine proper.

“The new benchmark still retains the fundamental learning objectives that seek to achieve national development goals as well as a sustainable development goal,” he said.
