The government of Kano State announced on Friday that it has killed no less than 340,000 birds since the resurgence of bird flu in their domain two months ago.
News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Director of Veterinary Services in the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources, said that 49 farms have been affected.
“We have killed over 340, 000 birds since the disease resurfaced in the state on Dec. 21, 2015.
“The birds were destroyed in 49 poultry farms across the state, “ he said.
He lamented that the efforts of his department have been affected by the shortage of
Personal Protective Equipment, PPE.
“The equipment is being used by health personnel to go into the affected farms to kill infected birds.
“It is against the WHO standard to kill the infected birds without wearing the PPE, “ he said.
He called on the Federal Government to assist the state with the necessary drugs and equipment for checking the spread of the disease.
