Court remands judge in prison for alleged fraud

An area court judge, Umar You Gwani was on Friday remanded in prison custody by a Federal High Court sitting in Gombe for engaging in fraudulent activities.
Gwani is being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC for allegedly obtaining money from the public by false pretence and conspiracy.

According to the prosecution counsel, Zarami Mohammed, the accused conspired with two other persons to sell plots of land belonging to Gombe State government by false pretence.

He further told the court that the judge did not contact the Ministry of Land and Survey and Local Government Area prior to selling the plots of land. He also said that the judge afterwards denied receiving payments for the eight or nine plots sold for N7 million.

The defense counsel Mukaan Kingsley told the press after the day's proceedings that he was surprised that what was listed in the charge sheet was different from what transpired in the court.
