LG campaign ends in tragedy as APC van kills PDP councillor

Tension built up in Bida, Niger State yesterday when an All Progressives Congress, APC campaign vehicle ran over a Peoples Democratic Party, PDP former councillor, killing him instantly, barely 24 hours to the local council elections holding in the state today.

The victim was identified as Hon Lawal Manko from Masaba B ward.

LEADERSHIP reports that tempers rose among the PDP members in the area who felt that the killing was a deliberate act, but the situation was quickly brought under control by the police who swung into action to douse the tension.

An eyewitness said that tempers further came down when PDP supporters saw that the driver of the offending APC vehicle sustained some injuries of his own.

While confirming the news, the Public Relations Officer, Niger State Police Command, Mr Bala Elkana said that preliminary findings indicate that the incident was purely an accident that resulted from reckless driving.

He said that the police would thoroughly investigate the accident while assuring that the command was fully poised to maintain the peace in the area.

An eyewitness account has it that another PDP member who was injured in the accident is already receiving treatment at the hospital.

Niger State will be electing Chairmen and Councilors into the 25 local government areas in the state today, Saturday, 16 January 2016.
