Fire Service personnel look on as inferno consumes 500 shops in Kaduna market.

No fewer than five hundred shops were consumed by an early morning fire at the Station Market in Kaduna South local government area of Kaduna State.

Items destroyed in the fire incident include foodstuff, fruits, plastics and mobile phone accessories valued at hundreds of millions of naira.

The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN reports that the fire which broke out at about 1am lasted till around 5 am by which time the market which was the main hub for fruits, grains, chicken and plastics had become a smouldering heap with practically everything in sight completely burnt out.

All around the shouldering remains of the market, anguished shop owners and their loved ones could be seen bemoaning their losses.

According to eyewitness accounts, men of the Kaduna State Fire Service arrived the scene in time but their vehicle broke down before they could engage the raging fire.

“Men of the state fire service came on time but they were unable to put out the fire as their truck developed fault and we had to use buckets to put off the fire," said Danladi Rabiu, the head of the market's security unit.
