Vigilantes arrest Boko Haram bombers, foil attack on Maiduguri mosque

A major tragedy was averted in Maiduguri, Borno State on Thursday when a vigilante group known as Civilian-JTF intercepted five large food flasks filled with already primed bombs outside the popular Medinatu Mosque.

The mosque was filled with thousands of adherents of the Tijjaniya Islamic sect who were marking the Maulud Nabiyi.(the birthday of the Holy Prophet Mohammed) .

The five suspects arrested with the bombs claimed that they were taking food to the people who had come to celebrate Eid-el-maulud.

A member of the Civilian JTF gave an account of the arrest.

“When we saw them coming with hand pushed cart filled with food flasks, we thought they were normal people that usually come here.

"We almost passed them on when one of our members instinctively asked what the content of the large food flasks were, and they said ‘hot rice to be delivered to the Sheik’s guests’. All of us were almost deceived but when we insisted on seeing the flasks opened for proper inspection, the conveyors became jittery, and by the time we forced them to open the flasks we were shocked to find primed bombs in all the flasks”.

The mosque headed by Sheikh Abdullahi was said to have over 5000 worshippers in it at time the terrorists tried to get access to it.
