Former governor of Akwa Ibom State and Minority Leader of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio was the guest of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC on Friday.
Senator Akpabio who served as governor of Akwa Ibom State for eight years from 2007-2015 was at the Abuja Headquarters of the anti graft agency on Friday evening to answer questions on a petition alleging a fraud of N108.1b against him.
Specifically, the petition filed by Leo Ekpenyong on 22 June 2015 and addressed to President Muhammadu Buhari and the EFCC alleged that Akpabio while serving as governor of Akwa Ibom State converted the sum of N108.1b belonging to the people of Akwa Ibom State to his personal use.
Akpabio was accompanied to the EFCC by his lawyer, Ricky Tarfa (SAN).
After honoring the anti graft agency's invitation, Akpabio took to Twitter to take a swipe at those he accused of spreading rumors about his arrest. He wrote on his Twitter handle @SenAkpabio ;
“Senator Akpabio was never arrested. He simply obliged an invitation to come and answer some questions at the EFCC headquarters.
“Senator Akpabio has nothing to hide. That’s why he walked into EFCC himself this evening to answer questions about his tenure in Akwa Ibom.
“Those who are playing politics with the decision of Senator Akpabio to honour the EFCC invitation must be acting a known script.
“Senator Akpabio was called from EFCC to come for explanations and he drove there himself 50 minutes later. So, why all the news of arrest?”
