Soldiers To Protect Oil Pipelines

Preparations have reached an advanced stage for operatives of the Nigerian military to take over the protection of the country's oil pipelines from militants.

Col Rabe Abubakar, Acting Director, Defense Information disclosed this on Tuesday, adding that the GMD of the NNPC, Dr Emmanuel Kachikwu had already met with the Chief of Defense Staff, Gen Gabriel Olonisakin to work out modalities for the implementation of the project.

Col Abubakar said that the GMD's visit to the CDS was sequel to NNPC's proposal to President Buhari to give the Army Corps of Engineers charge over the maintenance and protection of the oil pipelines.

The Punch quotes Dr Kachikwu to have told the CDS that plans are on to procure additional boats for naval patrol and tracking equipment to monitor the vessels coming into the country.

“We are trying to equip the Navy a lot more with boats for patrols; we are trying to get trackers and central system to be able to monitor every vessel that comes in and out of the country.

“We have equally spoken with the Chief of Air Staff on other effective ways of collaboration."

It is estimated that Nigeria loses about 250,000 barrels of oil per day.
