Police Place Militia Groups, Radical Preachers Under Surveillance

To augment other measures aimed at tackling the spread of terrorist activities across the country, the police has placed extremist clerics and all militia groups under watch.

Force Public Relations Officer, Olabisi Kolawole told newsmen that the police is now closely monitoring the activities of Movement For The Actualization of the Sovereign State Of Biafra, MASSOB, Odua People's Congress, OPC, Movement For The Emancipation Of The Niger Delta, MEND, Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force, NDPVF and other similar organizations.

She warned that although the police force respects citizens' right to freedom of religion and association, it would not allow comments and actions that are likely to cause a breach of the peace.

She said that following the recent order by Inspector General of Police, Mr Solomon Arase to clampdown on groups and people inciting violence and social unrest, the “police are mounting surveillance on every ethnic militia group that is engaged in acts that are inimical to the interest of the state whether they are OPC, MEND, MASSOB or Boko Haram, they will all be dealt with.”

Since the Police Chief issued the order, increased presence of police personnel have been reported across the country.
