President Muhammadu Buhari has been urged to dedicate a day in the month of May as Nigeria's National Fitness Day.
In an open letter to the President, the Amateur Body Building and Fitness Federation of Nigeria, ABBFFN lamented that despite unprecedented advancement in modern healthcare, there is a corresponding increase in deaths from preventable and noncommunicable diseases.
“The health situation in Nigeria is frightening as there is a sharp rise in preventable deaths caused by diseases such as heart diseases, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases."
The President of the federation, Soye Elekina highlighted the need for a policy drive to change the attitude of Nigerians towards healthy living. He therefore appealed to the President Buhari to
“Proclaim/adopt a National fitness day in the month of May every year which observance is already customary in countries such as the United States of America, United Kingdom, Australia, South Africa, among others.”
