Concerned relatives are still at a loss as to why 67 years old Usman Umaru of Kofar Hindi quarters, Birnin Kebbi, Nigeria decided to cut off his own penis.
Neighbors last Saturday heard Usman screaming in anguish in his room. On forcing the door open, they found him lying in a pool of his own blood. His severed penis and a bloodstained knife were found by his side.
He was quickly taken to Federal Medical Center, Birnin Kebbi where he was admitted for treatment. A source close to Usman said the hospital charged thirty-seven thousand naira to reattach the severed organ.
A neighbor who pleaded anonymity said that Usman Umaru has been going through mental stress as a result of extreme poverty.
