President Muhammadu Buhari recently turned down a plan by the bureaucrats at the State House, Abuja to procure 5 new armored Mercedes Benz S600 Guard for his use. The cars are valued at about N400m.
The proposal to buy those cars was apparently in the president's best interest. So, why did he reject it? Sources close to the president advanced two reasons.
The president described the plan as unnecessary and a waste of scarce resources given that the cars he inherited from former President Goodluck Jonathan are still in top working conditions. This is consistent with President Buhari's commitment to ensuring fiscal prudence.
The second reason why President Buhari rejected the proposal to buy the new armored cars is to show leadership by example and emphasize his zero tolerance for corruption and wasteful spending. As former House of Representatives Committee on Diaspora Affairs chairman, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa tweeted on Friday, @abikedabiri, "Not surprised PMB rejected 400m naira official cars. Typical of him. Leadership by example. Zero tolerance for corruption. More to come. Oh yes. The message is also no to wasteful spending in the PMB administration.
