Read Buhari's message to UNODC on repatriation of Nigeria's stolen funds

05 May 2016 | STATE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE
EXPEDITE REPATRIATION OF OUR STOLEN FUNDS, PRESIDENT BUHARI TELLS INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY

President Muhammadu Buhari Thursday in Abuja urged the United Nations Office for Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to facilitate the faster recovery of Nigeria’s stolen wealth stashed abroad.

Receiving the Executive Secretary of UNODC, Mr Yury Fedotov, President Buhari said that the process of recovering the stolen assets had "become tedious" to the consternation of many Nigerians.

“We are looking for more cooperation from the EU, United States, other countries and international institutions to recover the nation’s stolen assets, particularly proceeds from the stolen crude oil.

“It is taking very long and Nigerians are becoming impatient,” the President said.
President Buhari told Mr. Fedotov that his government has worked very hard in the past 11 months to reverse the very negative global perception of Nigeria on corruption.

“Our genuine efforts to deal with corruption and drugs have earned us international respect and this has encouraged us to do more."

“We know that by fighting the scourge of drugs and corruption and rebuilding trustworthiness, integrity, good business practices, and imposing discipline on youths to avoid drugs, we are not doing a favour to the international community, we are doing a favour to ourselves," the President said.

President Buhari also promised that his administration will work with the UN agency to rehabilitate young Nigerians who have been misled into consumption of illicit drugs and drug trafficking.

Mr. Fedotov told President Buhari that UNODC has chosen Nigeria as a pilot country for support and strategic cooperation in the fight against drugs and corruption.

Return to camp or lose your places, Siasia warns Enyimba, Pillars players

Dream Team VI Head Coach, Samson Siasia has warned the five Enyimba and Kano Pillars Football Club players that participated in Wednesday's midweek match in Kano to return to camp or forget the 2016 Olympic games.

The players Chima Akas, Daniel and Joseph Osadiaye of Enyimba as well as Ifeanyi Mathew and goalkeeper Yussuf Mohammed of Kano Pillars played in yesterday's game at the Sani Abacha Stadium which Enyimba won by 2 goals to 1.

“It seems some people don’t really understand the huge task ahead of us. We are in a tough group and only good preparations will help us in achieving our ambition in Brazil.

“I have told the invited payers that I will not permit them to go for the mid-week Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) games again maybe only the weekend games. So I am using this medium to plead with the clubs to bear with us because we have less than three months to prepare for the Olympics.

“As I speak with you now, we have five players from Enyimba Football Club and Kano Pillars that played in today’s mid-week match (yesterday) that are yet to join us. So this is what I am saying. We need to face the work at hand squarely and with all the necessary seriousness and commitment," Siasia told SportingLife.
