Fulani herdsmen kill district head, nephew in Kaduna

Even as the dust raised by last Monday's killings by herdsmen in Ukpabi-Nimbo community in Enugu State is yet to settle, suspected Fulani herdsmen have killed the District Head of Fadan Karshi, a commercial town in Sanga Local Government Area, South of Kaduna State..

The 66 years old District Head, Mr. Bala Madaki,  was killed along with his nephew, Emmanuel Tanko, a high school student.

A community leader, Pastor Mike Makarfi gave an account of the Sunday night attack.

“It was very hot last night (Sunday night) and people were sleeping outside. Around 10 p.m., the chief moved into his house with his family. Then some gunmen who our people said were Fulani, stormed his compound and started shooting.

“They went into his room and shot him point blank. They also shot a small boy, Emmanuel Tanko, who was writing his final year secondary school exams. The boy was the nephew of the late chief.

“Right now, Fadan Karshi is deserted. Shops and service centres are shut. People are either staying indoors or are leaving town. No one knows what is coming next.

“Police are patrolling the streets, but I am not sure if they have any clue about the murderers. I want you to recall that this was the District Head that received former Governor Mukhtar Yero on September 22, 2014, when our women protested half naked because of the scale of killings by Fulani going on at that time.

“Today, the type of killings going on are those of isolated people. Cattle are also grazing freely on people's farms in these areas of Sanga and people are afraid to do anything about it. Now they are targeting people and eliminating them.

“What people are saying about the killings of our district head is that he may have been killed by Fulani who have a grudge against him and this community.

“In May, 2014, some Fulani armed men invaded the police station here and seven people were killed. As they were escaping, two were killed in an exchange of gunfire between them and the Police.

“The Fulani Association later petitioned the then National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd) and copied the governor. They said that our late District head should be arrested, dethroned and prosecuted for the death of the two Fulani. We still have a copy of the petition. We suspect that his death may be connected to that incident.

“This is unfortunate, because in the past one week, we have had some respite, just for the violence to turn this way,” he said.

The Kaduna State Police spokesman, DSP Zubairu Abubakar confirmed the incident to Vanguard but said that he was yet to be briefed by the DPO from the area.

Allow states to decide own minimum wage - Odigie-Oyegun

The National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun has suggested that states be allowed to fix their own minimum wage according to their financial abilities.

Odigie-Oyegun said during a media chat in Abuja on Tuesday that the executive at federal and state levels would have to consider the demand for a higher minimum wage in line with their ability to pay.

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC had recently called for a national minimum wage of N56,000 as against the N18,000 presently being received by the least paid government workers.

''That is always what happens (the demand) but this must be based on the economic realities on the ground, the ability to pay.

''Perhaps to even demonstrate that this is not a central but a federal matter that states should be allowed to make their decisions based on their ability to pay.

''The cost of living is not the same in every part of the country,” he said.

Security agencies get marching orders to deal with rampaging Fulani herdsmen

Visiting members of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, CBCN were on Monday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja told by President Muhammadu Buhari of his resolve to deal decisively with armed herdsmen who have been attacking communities across the country.

Six tips for handling tyre burst, by FRSC

HOW TO HANDLE A TYRE BURST

1. Start with maintaining a safe driving speed; there are just no two sides to this. The lower your speed, the higher your chance of survival. A blowout at 80–90 km/h (50–56 mph) will be far less dramatic than one at 140–150 km/h (87–93 mph). Indeed, if you survive a tire burst at 150 km/h (93 mph), consider it a gift of God.

2. Do not slam on the brake pedal. Of course, this is easier said than done, as our brains are hardwired to instinctively jam the brake pedal in an emergency. Hard braking is actually the worst thing you can do as it will further imbalance the vehicle and throw it out of control.

3. Don’t abruptly take your foot off the accelerator. Do it slowly and gradually. In fact, Michelin recommends that you maintain accelerator input momentarily, before releasing it slowly. The deceleration force from a blown tire is so strong that your car will anyway slow down rapidly. If you have engaged cruise control, be sure to disengage it immediately.

4. Try your best to keep the vehicle pointed straight. Cornering or turning with a blown tire will greatly upset the car’s composure. If your car is pulling to one side, you might need to pull the steering in the opposite direction to keep it going straight. This is critical, else you risk drifting into the road divider or worse still, the opposite lane.

5. Do not attempt to over-correct. The key is to maintain the vehicle’s stability. A sharp yank of the steering wheel can result in a rollover. Even when you have gained control and are slowly moving to a safe parking spot, do so with the mildest steering inputs possible.

6. Allow the vehicle to gradually coast to a stop. Use engine braking if necessary. Lightly engage the brakes only when your car has decelerated to a slow speed. Use the turn indicators and pull over safely off the road. Drive on the bare metal wheel if you have to, but do not stop in the middle of the road as you run the risk of getting rear-ended by a speeding car. Remember to activate your hazard lights when stopped.
