Why NFF can't pay coaches by Yahaya-Kwande

The Chris Giwa faction of the Nigerian Football Federation, NFF is responsible for the nonpayment of the salaries of coaches working under the federation.

Media and Publicity Committee Chairman of the NFF, Suleiman Yahaya-Kwande, said in a statement he issued on Sunday that the Federation's bankers stopped the salaries of the coaches following a letter from the Giwa faction claiming that it had no right to order the payment of coaches.

“The truth, which the Honourable Minister himself explained to the media in Abuja a couple of weeks ago, is that the money the NFF gets from government does not include coaches’ salaries. The NFF pays the coaches from money received from sponsorship, which was not designed by the current NFF Board; it is a practice we met on ground.

“We have the money to pay the coaches. The NFF sent the mandates to the banks to pay the coaches about two weeks ago, but the Giwa group wrote to the banks to say they had a court order, which in itself is criminal and untenable. There is NO court order telling Giwa he is president of NFF; it is very important to make that clarification. We have called on the Honourable Minister to call these fellows to order, but we are resolving the matter with the banks so that the coaches can get their salaries,” he said.

I know I must go and meet God - Babangida

Ex-Military President, Ibrahim Babangida spoke to newsmen on Sunday at his Minna Hilltop mansion over last week's rumors of his death.

Babangida who is now 74 said that God has destined illness and death for mankind and as such, no one could escape them.

“The rumour does not shock me; neither does it bother me because I know I must go and meet God, my creator. There is nothing really to worry about, my religion has told me.

“As a Muslim, I strongly believe everybody will die, everybody will die and everybody has to die.  It could be now or in hundred years’ time or two days to come but it doesn’t matter. Everybody must die,” he said.

The former president described Nigerians as very industrious people while expressing his strong belief that the country would surmount its present challenges.

“I still believe very strongly in this country, which is further demonstrated by the people of this great nation because they are a very industrious people, hardworking. That gives me the hope for Nigeria."

There were rumors last week that Babangida had been gravelly ill or may have actually passed on.

Three persons killed in Kaduna petrol tanker fire

A petrol tanker exploded at an NNPC mega station in Unguwar Ma’azu a suburb of Kaduna city on Saturday killing three persons and injuring fifteen others.

The fire which broke out around 7pm also burnt seventeen vehicles which had been queuing for petrol at the station.

An eyewitness told The Nation that the incident was caused by leaking fuel from the petrol tanker which was discharging fuel at the time.

The eyewitness said that the spillage got to the area where vehicles had queued up for fuel.

“But, when it was noticed, people were cautioned not to switch on their vehicles until the fuel dried up but a man in a Golf 3 vehicle was said to have switched on his car and fire broke out.

“It was so pathetic as the driver of the Golf car who did not heed to the warning did not live to tell the story. He got burnt beyond recognition inside his car.”
