Herdsmen call for reconciliation between Fulani and other ethnic groups

The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association has called for peaceful co-existence among the Fulani, Tiv and Jukun ethnic groups in Taraba State.

The National President of the cattle breeders , Alhaji Mohammadu Zuru, on Saturday in Jalingo, called for a meeting to reconcile the three ethnic groups during the swearing-in of the state and zonal executives of the association.

Zuru called for dialog in ending the incessant clashes between the three dominant tribes in the state.

"The only short-term solution to these incessant crises is an extended dialogue between all the ethnic groups concerned.

"The truth is that there is no crisis between the Fulanis’ Jukuns and Tiv; but there is crisis between the criminal elements in all these ethnic groups.

Our position is that when all of us are engaged in dialogue under the supervision of the state government, the crises will end,” he said

He also appealed to government at all levels to provide cattle routes and grazing reserves across the country to contain the perennial conflict between farmers and Fulani herdsmen.

"A grazer who lives in the bush hardly benefits from infrastructure which is mostly found in urban centres.

We are appealing to government at all levels to provide cattle routes and grazing reserves to herdsmen as compensation for their inability to access to infrastructure and social amenities,” he said.

Read Buhari's Easter message to Nigerians

Fellow Nigerians,

I rejoice with you all, especially our Christian brothers and sisters, as we celebrate Easter.

For Christians all over the world, this celebration is in commemoration of the supreme sacrifice which Jesus Christ made for the salvation of mankind.

The Gospels also tell us that during his earthly ministry, Jesus Christ repeatedly urged his disciples and followers to
“love one another as I have loved you”.

As we celebrate Easter this year, I sincerely believe that it will serve our dear nation very well if we all imbibe this essential message of Jesus Christ and truly learn to love our countrymen and women as we love ourselves.

Indeed, we will surely make faster progress towards the achievement of the peaceful, united, strong, progressive and prosperous country we all desire if, as a nation, we eschew all divisive, parochial, ethnic and religious sentiments and rivalries, and begin to live more harmoniously with our compatriots, as Jesus Christ and the founders of the world’s other great religions enjoined mankind.

Our unfortunate notoriety in recent years as a country where the blood of men, women and children are wantonly and callously shed in frequent orgies of criminal, political, ethnic and religious violence has become very embarrassing and utterly unacceptable.

My administration is determined to achieve greater peace and security across our nation by ending the avoidable conflicts and crises that hinder our national progress.

I ask for greater support from all Nigerians in this regard. We must put a stop to politically motivated killings. Our communities must be made safe again for all inhabitants to live together in peace and harmony.

Our armed forces, police and other security agencies are being progressively reformed, repositioned and empowered to win the war against terrorism and make mass killings, abductions and other criminal atrocities things of the past in our beloved country.

Let us all also play our parts as patriotic citizens and do all that we can to ensure that we make Nigeria a safer, more peaceful and happier place for its people and others.

Faith, belief and the fulfilment of expectations are also key themes of the Easter celebration. I urge you all therefore, to continue to have faith in the future greatness of our country and to believe that the CHANGE my administration promised will surely come to fruition.

That CHANGE, which we all yearn for, will certainly occur more rapidly if we all place the love of our country above selfish personal and group interests.

The National Assembly has just passed the 2016 budget. I assure all Nigerians that we will do our utmost best to ensure that the budget, the first since my election as President, is efficiently and successfully implemented towards achieving our objective of faster economic growth and development.
I thank the vast majority of Nigerians for their patience and understanding in the first ten months of this administration.

As we go forward, I assure you all that we are working very hard to overcome the challenges we encountered on assumption of office.

We are moving on with an unshaken resolve and determination to deliver on the mandate you gave us on March 28 , last year.

I wish you all very happy Easter celebrations.

Ikpeba tips Super Eagles to win in Egypt

Former AS Monaco and Borussia Dortmund forward, Victor Ikpeba has praised the spirit with which the Super Eagles approached their AFCON 2017 qualification match against the Pharaohs of Egypt at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna on Friday.

AS Roma winger, Mohammed Salah snatched an equalizer for the Egyptians when he scored in the closing minutes of the match.

Ikpeba who is remembered for scoring a memorable goal against Egypt in an Atlanta ’96 Olympic qualifier in Cairo said that the Eagles will get a win on Tuesday in Alexandria if they maintain the same spirit.

“Difficult game, but the boys did very well. We should be proud of them. And congrats to Siasia for a good job in a short time.

“If these boys play with this same spirit, I am very confident that they will win in Egypt #ThankYouSuperEagles,” he said.

We will win in Alexandria - Siasia

The failure of the Egyptians to stick to the fair play rule and loss of concentration by Nigerian players cost the Super Eagles victory in Friday’s AFCON 2017 qualification match at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna.

The Nigerian team conceded a late equalizer, helping the Egyptians to force them to a 1 - 1 draw.

“Firstly I will have to say that in football there is no more home advantage or away advantage. We lost concentration in the last three minutes of the extra time. One of our players (Godfrey Oboabona) was down and instead of kicking the ball far away for fair play he kicked it to our side which is wrong.

“Fair play sometimes is not fair play. If you are losing almost at the end of the game you won’t do the fair play rule. Fair play or not fair play we should be marking a player like Mohamed Salah until the last seconds of the game. I think we should blame ourselves not the Egyptians."

He however pledged to turn the table in Alexandria, Egypt noting that there is no more home advantage in football.

“We will turn the table in Alexandria, of course we can. We have been in this situation before so why can’t we (win in Alexandria). We have to move forward after today’s game. Moving forward is that we have to get ourselves together and try to go to Egypt and win. This is a game of football when anything can happen. So we will go out there and try and win in Egypt. If we don’t win that means we are out of the game. We will try our best to go and win there. Everything is possible," he said.
