Tragedy averted as Army foils two suicide attacks near Maiduguri

Troops working with local vigilantes have intercepted two female suicide bombers on the outskirts of Maiduguri.

The Acting Director of Nigerian Army Public Relations, Col Sani Usman said this in a statement he issued in Maiduguri on Friday.

"The ever alert and vigilant troops of 7 Division Garrison based in Maiduguri, in conjunction with Civilian JTF, averted yet another suicide attack on the innocent citizens in Borno on Friday.

"The troops intercepted 2 female suicide bombers at about 1.20 this morning, almost 100 metres south of Umurari village, outskirts of Maiduguri.

"However, one of the suicide bombers on sighting our troops detonated her explosive device, killing herself instantly, while the second bomber in an attempt to escape was gunned down by one of the Garrison snipers.

"The combined team of Nigeria Police and Nigerian Army’s Explosive Ordinance Device team safely detonated the unexploded Improvised Explosive Devices strapped on the gunned down suicide bomber.

It is important to state that there was no casualty beyond the two suicide bombers. Presently, the troops and the Civilian JTF deployed in the village are now combing the general area to forestall further breach of security.

"The situation in the area is calm and law abiding citizens are going about their normal activities without fear,’’ he said.

STATE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE
PRESIDENCY DISSOCIATES ITSELF FROM ‪#‎ISTANDWITHBUHARI‬ GROUP

The Presidency formally dissociates itself from the #Istandwithbuhari advocacy group and demands that the group should immediately stop claiming any alliance with the Buhari Administration.

The Presidency also demands that the persons behind the controversial #Istandwithbuhari group should stop using President Muhammadu Buhari's name and that of his wife, Mrs. Aisha Muhammadu Buhari to promote themselves and their activities.

Among other reasons, we have found it necessary to distance the Presidency from the #Istandwithbuhari group because its premature and ostentatious celebration of the present administration's achievements is totally inconsistent with President Buhari's philosophy of service with humility. While the present administration has indeed recorded significant successes in its priority areas of improving security across the nation, ending the Boko Haram insurgency, curbing official corruption and revamping Nigeria's economy, President Buhari is well aware that his government still has a lot of national challenges to overcome.

The President prefers to give his fullest attention to addressing those challenges without the unsolicited and unwelcome distraction of untimely praise-singing from groups with dubious and questionable motives.

32 CSOs urge FG to punish perpetrators of violence in Rivers elections

Thirty-two Civil Society Organizations on Thursday in Abuja called on the Federal Government to bring the perpetrators of violence in last Saturday’s legislative rerun elections in Rivers State to justice.

In a statement signed by its Co-conveners, Dr. Chima Amadi and Ezenwa, the groups condemned the violence in which seven persons including a youth corper Mr Samuel Okonta were killed.

While calling for the arrest of those linked with the violence and killings, the CSOs appealed to Nigerians to support the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC to reform the electoral process in a way that the people can freely elect their leaders.

“The security breaches culminating in the destruction of life and property, despite the large number of security personnel deployed in Rivers State, is a cause for worry. Six thousand conventional policemen, eight additional or visiting mobile police squadrons to support the 46 units of mobile police in the state, soldiers, Department of State Services (DSS) operatives, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) personnel and other paramilitary agencies could not provide security for the National and State Assembly elections in just one state.

“More worrisome is the fact that each of the above-mentioned agencies was associated with particular political parties and report from observers in the field can confirm that in several instances these security agencies worked for the parties they were associated with.
“We condemn the violence unleashed on the state by the political actors and their agents and call for the arrest and prosecution of any individual found to have remotely or actively aided and abetted the violence.

“We also call on the Federal Government to ensure effective investigation of the violence in Rivers with a view to identifying the perpetrators and bringing them to account.

“Security is the responsibility of the Federal Government. The only way to curb recurrent electoral violence is to bring perpetrators to account.

“We are aware that INEC made arrangements for credible elections and its officers ready to deploy to polling units in a charged environment, a situation which the commission still braced itself to discharge its responsibility.”

“Months after, Adaje could not deliver on his promise, a situation that prompted the applicants to visit his office where they discovered it was fraud.
