The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC on Thursday arraigned a Deputy Director, Regional Tax Office of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS, Abumere Joseph Osagie and a mother of four, Jamila Ojora before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Maitama, Abuja on a two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and receipt of gratification.
The accused persons were said to have approached the Chancellor of Baze University, Abuja, Senator Datti with a tax assessment of N20,029,496.00 on January 27, 2016, through a letter of intent.
Having paid the tax, Senator Datti reportedly requested for the assessment certificate, but the accused persons allegedly demanded for a N5m.
The anti graft agency said that marked N5million was delivered to Osagie through Ojora, in a sting operation, which led to the arrest of the defendants.
The offense according to the EFCC contravenes Section 17(1)(a) and punishable under 17 (1) (c) of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000.
The charge sheet partly reads;
“That you Abumere Joseph Osagie and Jamila Ojora on or about January 27, 2016 in Abuja within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, corruptly accepted the sum of N5,000,000.00 (five million naira) from one Senator Ahmed Datti as a gift for having done a tax assessment for Baze University."
The accused persons denied the charges against them and were granted bail in the sum of one million naira each by Justice Olasunmbo Goodluck.
The judge however ordered the accused to be remanded in prison or EFCC custody until they are able to meet their bail conditions.
She adjourned the case to April 27 for hearing.

Super Eagles’ interim Head Coach Samson Siasia, has announced March 21 as the deadline for foreign based Eagles to be in camp for the first leg of the double header of Africa Cup of Nations’ qualifying matches between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and the visiting Pharaohs of Egypt.
He said that it was important for the players to be in camp on time to allow them sufficient time to acclimatize to the hot weather conditions of Kaduna.
He assured that Nigeria would win against Egypt even though the match would be difficult.
“The spirit in camp is very good and everybody is fighting hard to snatch a shirt in the team. We don’t have to wait for the foreign based players to come before starting work. The home based players are professional players too and they are used to the weather here which may be another big deciding factor. If they do well at the training they have a big chance of playing against Egypt.
“So the deadline for the foreign based to come to camp should be March 21 because we will move to Kaduna the next day.
“We have to plan how we play. We don’t want to say everything now because it is a global village and we won’t like to reveal all our secrets and plans to the media. The Team Secretary, Dayo Enebi has been in constant contact with the foreign based players.
“I have also been sending messages to the ones that have been playing, wishing them good luck and injury free match before they play their league matches and they have been responding to the text messages too," he said.
