Stealing of Christian girls by Muslims: This nonsense must stop, says CAN.

Following the national outrage generated by the abduction of 13 year-old Christian girl Ese Oruru by 25 year-old Muslim man, Yunusa Dahiru and the revelation of several other similar abductions, the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN has demanded an end to the stealing of Christian girls by Muslims.

Speaking in an interview published in The Punch on Sunday, the General Secretary of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Rev. Musa Asake condemned the practice which he said has been going on for a long time.

"This has been going on in the North. In fact, our Christian girls are abducted but nothing is done about it. It is so sad that while we are praying to live in peace, another side is not showing a sign of peace. I don’t know where it is in the religion that teaches that they can take someone’s daughter, convert her from Christianity to Islam and marry her (off). If that is religion, then it is very unfortunate. I also want to make it very clear: If it were Christians doing this to Muslim girls, Nigerians would have been burnt to ashes. So, to me, it is a total disrespect and a complete disobedience of the law of the land and the law of God. To me, it is stealing; I don’t know why you are calling it abduction. It is stealing and the government should wake up and do something. There is nobody who has the right to take somebody’s daughter and even have the right to give her (away) in marriage. We had a similar experience in Minna (Niger State) and the matter was reported even up to the Presidency. The governor refused to cooperate. They took that girl, changed her name and married her (off). It is not good. That is what some of these Muslims are doing to us. The media should investigate and bring these ones out and the government should come out with a law. This one (Ese) is so fortunate. The one I am talking about is a pastor’s daughter. They married her off and up till today, the government is doing nothing. We met with the deputy governor; his words were arrogant. We are running out of patience. If we want to live in peace in Nigeria, then some of these Muslims have to behave. I don’t see why those practicing a religion will be stealing people’s children and they are doing it with impunity. It is unfortunate," he said.

Speaking further, Rev Asake said that Muslims have been taking Christians for granted.

"How can you take a Christian girl to your Islamic court and say she can marry whoever she wants? Are they the parents? The government is not — I repeat, is not — against the whole thing. That is why when it happens, just because Christians are saying ‘we want peace,’ they will provoke us. I think we have had enough of that kind of one-sided peace. Enough of it! Christians have been taken for granted and it will soon come to an end. We cannot continue to have this kind of nonsense. Someone takes somebody’s daughter and marries her. Can somebody else take their daughter to go and marry? If they have many children and they are not accountable or responsible for them, in the Christian community, we are not like that. If you have your child, you need to know where your child is, what he is doing and who he is doing it with. Yes, we do have some stubborn ones, but you cannot steal my daughter and go and marry her. Who are you?" he queried.

We will not tolerate demand for Biafra - Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has vowed that Nigeria would not tolerate agitations for an independent State of Biafra.

Buhari who spoke in an interview with Aljazeera Television during an official visit to Qatar recalled that over two million lives were lost in the 1967-1970 civil war that was fought over Biafra.

“At least two millions Nigerians were killed in the Biafra war. And for somebody to wake up, may be they weren’t born then, looking for Biafra after two millions people were killed, they are joking with the security and Nigeria won’t tolerate Biafra,” he said.

We didn't cancel Buhari's N500b welfare package

The National Assembly has denied media reports that it stopped the N500b welfare package for vulnerable Nigerians proposed by the Buhari administration in the 2016 budget.

In a joint statement by the Chairman of the Appropriation Committee of the Senate, Senator Mohammed Danjuma Goje and his House of Representatives counterpart, Abdulmumin Jibrin, the lawmakers said that there was no truth in the story being circulated by a section of the media.

They recalled that during a meeting with the ministers of Finance, Budget and National Planning, the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN Governor, Accountant General of the Federation and Director General, Budget Office of the Federation on the budget, they only advised that the implementation of the program be postponed to next year to allow for better preparation.

“The Committee expressed concern over reports indicating that the government has yet to put in place sufficient structure for proper take off of a programme which is expected to bring succour to the poorest of the poor in the society.

“It was our considered view that the amount involved is so huge that adequate preparation and structure needed to be put in place for it to succeed and achieve the desired result, and also to avoid mistakes of the past, where similar laudable programmes were initiated, but did not succeed as a result of poor implementation.

“We, therefore, suggested that the take off of the programme be postponed to next year, so as to enable the government prepare adequately and avoid any failure.

“The committee further suggested to the Executive that the money proposed in this year’s budget be invested in some critical sectors and much-needed infrastructure, which will give same or even higher result-of lifting the most vulnerable citizens from poverty, while adequate preparations be made for its full take off next year.”

“At no point at that meeting did Goje or any Committee member insinuate that we want to “kill” or are not in support of the intervention programme.

“What the Committee did was just to share our perspectives, based on information available to us, because as members of the same government, we have a responsibility to draw the attention of the Executive to issues of concern, so that we achieve greater good for the greater number of our people.

“Nigerians cannot be fooled, because it is a public knowledge that the 8th Assembly, since its inception, has been supportive of the Buhari government.

"Moreover, we are all members of the same political party and the proposed N500 billion special intervention fund is a major programme of our party, which we strongly believe, if implemented to the fullest, will go along way in lifting thousands of households from abject poverty and squalor.

“Moreover, the President himself, had last month during his visit to the Middle East, hinted of his preference to channel the N500 billion and invest it into critical sectors and needed infrastructure, rather than handout stipends to the poor.

“This, according to him, will give even same or better result, in terms of alleviating the most vulnerable, which the program intends to reach,” they said.
