Buhari welcomes Islamic Bank's offer to fund development in Nigeria.

President Muhammadu Buhari has welcomed an offer by the Islamic Development Bank to mobilise funds for investment and  development of infrastructure in Nigeria.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu said that Buhari showed his delight at the offer during a meeting with the IDB President, Dr. Ahmed Mohammed Ali, in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.

Ali reportedly assured Buhari that the IDB would work with her traditional partners like the Saudi Fund, the Kuwait Fund, Arab Bank for Development in Africa and the Abu Dhabi Fund,  to increase the quantum of funding available to Nigeria.

Buhari on his part reiterated his administration's determination to diversify the Nigerian economy.

“The days of Nigeria as a big  oil producer with plenty of money are gone. We need all the support we can get to diversify our economy as quickly as possible.

“We also need to rehabilitate our infrastructure, develop the domestic capacity to feed ourselves  and export the surplus,” he said.

We detained Col Adegbe at the instance of the Army - EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC has told the court that its detention of Col Ojogbane Adegbe, former Aide de Camp to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, is at the instance of the Nigerian Army.

The EFCC also told the court that it played no role in summoning Col Adegbe back from his military course in the United Kingdom.

The anti graft agency made the above submissions in a counter affidavit opposing Col Adegbe's suit in which he demanded N100m as compensation for unlawful detention.

In the counter affidavit filed before Justice Yusuf Halilu of a Federal Capital Territory High Court in Jabi, Abuja, the EFCC averred as follows:

“In further response to the paragraph 6 of the affidavit in support of the applicant’s (Adegbe’s) application, the respondent (the EFCC)‎ states that it has never invited the applicant for any investigation.

“The true position is that it was his office, the Nigerian Army, that brought him to theoffice of the respondent, in furtherance of their investigation into detected financial crimes committed in the arms procurement involving the applicant.

“That contrary to the depositions contained in paragraph 7 of the affidavit in support of the applicant’s application, the respondent has never caused the Nigerian Army to invite the applicant from anywhere.

“That contrary to the depositions contained in paragraph 12 of the affidavit in support of the applicant’s application, the respondent states that the applicant is in custody at the instance of his employee, the Nigerian Army.”

Troops foil Boko Haram attack on Borno IDP camp

Boko Haram insurgents have made another attempt to destroy the Internally Displaced Persons camp in Dikwa, Borno State, just a few weeks after they claimed many casualties there using child suicide bombers.

This time, the terrorists were thwarted by vigilant troops, according to Army spokesman Col Sani Usman.

“Following dislodgement of Boko Haram terrorists’ camps in the border towns of Kumshe and Talala by joint operations of Nigerian and Cameroonian forces, the terrorists made a futile attempt on Dikwa early today.

“From all indications, the terrorists aimed at causing havoc at the IDPs camp located at Dikwa. However and unknown to the fleeing Boko Haram terrorists, the Armed Forces Special Forces decisively dealt with the terrorists, killing many and recovering vehicle, arms and ammunition.

“Unfortunately, we lost a soldier and a member of the local vigilante (Civilian JTF) during the encounter, while three soldiers and four IDPs sustained injuries. A military vehicle was damaged by a Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED) suicide bomber.

“The troops recovered 26 bodies of the Boko Haram terrorists, while others escaped with gunshot wounds; destroyed 3 VBIEDs , 1 MBIED and two gun trucks."

Other items recovered from the terrorists are ;1 gun truck mounted with an Anti-Aircraft Gun, 1 Dushka Anti-Aircraft Gun, 1 Browning Anti-Aircraft Gun, 1 Rocket Propelled Grenade, RPG tube, 1General Purpose Machine Gun, GPMG, 4 AK 47 Rifles, 3 RPG Bombs, 36 Hand Grenades, 1 Smoke Grenade, 8 AK-47 rifle magazines, 236 rounds of 12.7mm ammunition, 396 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition and 101 rounds of 762mm special ammunition.

Unlawful detention: Jonathan's ex-ADC slaps EFCC with N100m lawsuit

Erstwhile Aide-de-Camp to former President Goodluck Jonathan, Col. Ojogbane Adegbe, has dragged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC to a Federal Territory High Court in Gudu, demanding N100m as compensation for unlawful detention by the anti-graft agency.

In suit number CV/995/16 filed on behalf of the plaintiff by his counsel, Ogwu Onoja, SAN, on February 17, 2016, he said that he has been detained by the EFCC since February 11 without any charges.

He contended as follows in the suit :
(a) that the EFCC by his continued detention is in violation of his right to personal liberty and freedom of movement guaranteed under Sections 35 and 41 of the 1999 Constitution.
(b) that the EFCC’s action violated Articles 5, 6 and 12 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

Recall that Col Adegbe was summoned by Army authorities from the United Kingdom where he was attending a course after  serving as Jonathan’s ADC to assist the EFCC in their investigation into certain transactions.

Adegbe is seeking the following reliefs from the court:

“A declaration that the arrest and continued detention of the applicant by the respondent since February 11, 2016 is unconstitutional as it offends his right to personal liberty as guaranteed by Section 35 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

“An order directing the respondent to release the applicant from unlawful detention with immediate effect.

“Or, in the alternative to Prayer 2, hereof; an order admitting the applicant to bail, pending his trial in a court of competent jurisdiction.

“N100m as general damages for unlawful detention of the applicant.

“A written apology by the respondent to the applicant.”

The suit is slated for hearing on Friday before Justice Y. Halilu.
