Army dismisses five soldiers for extortion in Abuja

Five soldiers attached to 176 Brigade Command, Abuja have been dismissed from service by the Nigerian Army for exporting money from members of the public.

The Guards Brigade Commander, Brigadier General M.S. Yusuf disclosed this to newsmen on Tuesday during an interactive session in his office.

“I want to inform you that five soldiers attached to the 176 Brigade Command in Gwagwalada, Abuja, were dismissed recently for collecting money from members of the public.

“This has become necessary because we want the best from our soldiers, and this can only be achieved if we have good understanding with other citizens of Nigeria, as it would help in bridging the gap between us and the civilians.

”The entitlements of all the soldiers on guard in the various formations in the country, are always paid upfront before they are deployed and based on this, we would not tolerate anyone of them collecting any gratification whatsoever from people. We do everything possible to make them conducive at their place of primary assignments,” he said.

He urged the National Orientation Agency to educate the public on how to relate with the military.

NHRC inaugurates panel on oil spill, environmental pollution

The National Human Rights Commission, NHRC on Monday in Abuja inaugurated a special investigative panel on oil spills and environmental pollution in Nigeria.

Speaking at the event, the commission's Executive Secretary, Prof Bem Angwe decried the failure of oil companies to attend to environmental pollution in their areas of operation.

He said that the panel was the commission's response to the myriad of petitions it had received on oil spills and environmental pollution.

"Several communities from the South-South geo-political zone have inundated the commission with complaints on oil spills and environmental degradation by oil companies operating in their communities.

"The complainants alleged that most of these oil spills were either improperly cleaned or no effort was made to clean them at all resulting in damage to both aquatic life and farmlands,’’ he said.

One of the communities whose petition the panel will be looking into is the Akwa Ibom Oil Producing Community Development Network, AKIPCON.

The President-General of AKIPCON, Mr Ufot Phenson told the press that oil pollution was threatening the lives of the people and could lead to youth restiveness getting out of hand.

"We have written to the oil companies in regard to the hardship they are putting us through.

I am talking about Mobil in particular. Shell also has an oil well that exploded in 2006 and spilled into farmlands but there has been no clean up and no compensation to the people.

"Youths have become restive and security that we are known for is threatened.

I hope the commission will help us to achieve a better environment because we want our environment to be clean.

"The abuse on human lives and the environment is getting out of hand as farmers can no longer plant their crops and fishermen can no longer make any catch.

"We wrote to National Oil Spill Detection Agency (NOSDRA). We wrote to the presidency and past and present governors of Akwa Ibom.

"We also wrote to Ministry of Environment in the state all to no avail.

"So, coming to the commission is our last resort, and we hope the panel will investigate the atrocities and help bring succour to us because it is a crime against humanity and must be stopped in the interest of our existence," he said.

The Chairman of the panel, Mrs Oti Ovrawah, assured that her team would work assiduously to investigate the petitions and make appropriate and timely recommendations.

Chief Judge inaugurates FCT Area Council Election Petitions Tribunal

The Chief Judge of the FCT High Court, Abuja, Justice Ishaq Bello on Monday, inaugurated the Federal Capital Territory Area Council Election Petitions Tribunal.

Urging members of the tribunal to do justice without fear or favour, Justice Bello said that Nigeria as a nation could not make any appreciable progress without absolute commitment to ground rules and adherence to due process.

“You should be careful and thorough in the review of petitions , responses, pleadings, evidence and argument of counsels that will appear before you.

“The nature of the task ahead entails that you may get accolades. But unfortunately, condemnation will also come your way. If you work in good conscience and according to law; not selling justice to the highest bidder or mortgaging it for tribalism, nepotism or any other unwholesome sentiment, society, history and posterity will acquit you by placing you on the positive side of the scale," he said.

After the meeting of its National Executive Committee last week, the Nigerian Football Federation, NFF sacked Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh's Personal Assistant, Tijani Babangida.

However, Oliseh has insisted on retaining and personally paying for the services of his choice PA.

Oliseh reportedly impressed it on his employers that his contract with the football federation permits him to  appoint an assistant coach and a special assistant.
