Army investigating Boko Haram attacks

Army authorities are investigating the recent attacks by Boko Haram terrorists on communities on the outskirts of Maiduguri.

The attacks which claimed several dozens of lives have forced most of the people to flee their villages for Maiduguri the state capital.

This information was contained in a statement issued by the Army on Sunday.

“The recent unfortunate attacks by Boko Haram terrorists on communities close to Maiduguri, despite our successes, call for concern,” the statement said.

“The Nigerian Army has already commenced investigation into the attacks… All cases of indiscipline and related acts of misconduct including human rights abuse in the operations will be tried by the Special Court Martial.”

Despite repeated claims by President Buhari and military authorities that Boko Haram has been largely decimated, the insurgents have continued to attack soft targets killing dozens of people in the process.

In Niger State, a messenger earns N265,000 monthly - Auditor

Facts emerging from an ongoing investigation into the workforce of the Niger State government have revealed how civil servants have been diverting government funds and collecting inflated salaries.

For instance, a source from Tibbot Consulting, the firm conducting the verification exercise, disclosed that a messenger at the Ministry of Finance earns N265,000 monthly while a cleaner at General Hospital Minna goes home with N375,000 monthly.

Also, not less than three Permanent Secretaries were found to be taking home about N1.3m monthly whereas they are supposed to earn between N400,000 and N500,000 per month.

Ironically, said the source, "some of the said permanent secretaries are members  of the  committee set up by the government to guide  the consultants in the ongoing verification exercise.”

Similarly, at the Veterinary Department  in the Ministry of Agriculture a herdsman whose job is taking cattle for grazing takes home N375,000 whereas his actual salary is N23,000 monthly.

Further investigation revealed that the junior workers did not actually take home the inflated salaries but were rather used as conduits to siphon public funds by top government officials.

We haven't lost hope, Chibok leaders tell Obasanjo.

The leaders of Chibok community have voiced their opposition to ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo's assertion that the Chibok girls abducted from their school by Boko Haram militants in 2014 are not likely to be found.

The former president had said that with the government of the day having failed to act within the 72-hour window of opportunity, there was little or no magic anyone could do now.

However, a leader in the community told LEADERSHIP that since none of the over 200 girls has been found dead or alive anywhere, there is hope that the insurgents are keeping them somewhere., probably as bargaining tools.

“Our hope lies on the fact that since their abduction, none of them has been found dead or alive; and that, to us, it is a good sign that they are alive. We would have been worried had there been any form of report that some of the girls were found dead, or some have been rescued during the rescue operations that were carried out recently.

“Going by the activities of the Boko Haram terrorists in the last four years, one would be deceiving himself to say that they are not an intelligent lot. They know the high premium the world has placed on the need to rescue the girls; so the schoolgirls may be their priced asset for bargain when push comes to shove. We don’t know where they are, but we believe our girls are kept somewhere, either within or outside the country. And our prayer is that, one day, we may see them, even though we are not ruling out the fact that it is a difficult task and all of them may not be rescued at the end of the day,” said the source.

Obasanjo had said, during an Annual Roundtable Discussion at the Obafemi Awololwo University, Ife, that “if any leader is promising to bring back the Chibok girls now, he is lying.”

President Muhammadu Buhari has repeatedly expressed his resolve to rescue the Chibok Girls at whatever cost
