Commission bars police escorts from performing domestic duties for VIPs

Henceforth, any policeman found carrying handbag, briefcase or umbrella for a big man will be sanctioned, says the Police Service Commission, PSC.

The Commission said that subjecting its men to domestic duties is an insult to the Police Force.

It added that it is deploying personnel to airports and highways to arrest policemen on illegal escort duty.

The Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Mr Mike Okiro told a news conference in Abuja on Wednesday that the Commission has worked out a blueprint of the class of dignitaries that should enjoy police escort services with the duties of such escorts clearly spelt out.

His words:
“You will all agree with me that this issue of policemen carrying handbags and umbrellas for VIPs has generated much uproar and even condemnation as it is capable of eroding the esteem of members of the NPF.

“To stem the tide, we have worked out a blueprint of the class of VIPs that should enjoy the privilege of attaching police officers to provide VIP protection with their specific duties clearly spelt out. The matter is awaiting the consent of the relevant authorities before we can start its implementation.

“Once the operation is fully planned, the Provost-Marshal of the Police and the staff of the PSC will operate jointly and will be stationed at domestic airports and some highways to arrest and discipline officers who embark on illegal escort or guard duty.”

Okiro announced that the PSC has established Zonal Offices to enable the members of the public who have issues against policemen to report such with ease.

Police in gun battle with bandits on Zuba/Kaduna highway

A team of policemen encountered a gang of armed robbers operating along Zuba/Kaduna highway in the early hours of Tuesday.

In the ensuing gun battle, two members of the robbery gang were severely wounded, while the rest fled.

“The area was combed but no arrest was made.

“Three (3) AK-47 rifles, one hundred and four (104) rounds of live ammunition, N57,130 cash and a red coloured Toyota Corolla car with registration number KSF 58 AJ, were recovered from the hoodlums,” according to the police.

The police also said that the remains of the injured robbers who later succumbed to their injuries have been deposited at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital.

EFCC Arraigns Former LG Boss For N982m Fraud

A former Chairman of Demsa Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Mr Felix Tangwami has been arraigned before a Yola High Court over frauds amounting to N982m.

Mr Wilson Uwujaren, Head of Media and Publicity of EFCC
said in a statement on Wednesday that the former local government chairman was docked before Justice Helen Nuhu Hamman Joda of Adamawa State High Court in Yola.

Tangwami is standing trial for fraudulently obtaining various sums of money to the tune of N982,468,000.

The statement said that the fraud involved “contracts for supply of cerebrospinal meningitis vaccines awarded in favour of Binam Integrated Services Ltd; supply of vaccines for immunization against typhoid in favor of  Nchaloro Nigeria Ltd; supply of 500 units of motorcycles to be distributed to all the Local government Areas in Adamawa State in favor of Bange Integrated service Ltd;building of a school for technical skill acquisition in Numan  in favor of Bange Company Ltd; and the supplyof anti-snake venom in favor of Tafari Nigeria Ltd.”

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail in the sum of N500m and a surety, who must be a family man with a landed property worth not less than N100m.

The case was adjourned till February 22, 2016 for hearing.

Senate to start budget debate next Tuesday

The Senate has announced Tuesday the 19th of January as commencement date for debate on the 2016 Budget Proposal.

The following tweet from the Twitter handle of the Nigerian Senate confirmed the date which was earlier announced by Saraki during Wednesday's plenary.

“Senate President @bukolasaraki announces that the debate of #2016AppropriationBill will commence on Tuesday 19th January 2016."

There were reports on Tuesday that the 2016 Appropriation Bill which was presented to a joint session of the National Assembly on Tuesday, December 22, 2015 had gone missing.

A committee set up by the Senate during Tuesday's closed session to look into the missing budget is billed to submit its report tomorrow.

Senate to receive report on missing budget tomorrow

The committee assigned to look into the missing 2016 budget will submit its report to the Senate on Thursday 14 January 2016.

The budget proposal was presented to a joint session of the National Assembly by President Muhammadu Buhari on December 22, 2015.

Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki gave assurance of the report on the floor of the Senate following a point of order raised by by the PDP Senator, representing Abia South Senatorial District, Sen. Eyinnaya Abaribe, for the Senate to address the issue of the missing budget, which dominated the traditional and social media space since Tuesday.

Responding to the point of order, Saraki said:
“It was agreed in the closed session yesterday, that the Senate will wait for a feedback from the committees assigned to look into the matter... the feedback from the committees should be ready by tomorrow (Thursday).”
