What Internally Displaced Persons are saying about the high rate of sex in the camps

Between August and September 2015 alone, about 410 births were recorded in the Internally Displaced Persons, IDP camps in the Northeast of Nigeria.

Saturday Sun's interactions with some residents of the IDP camps revealed the high rate of sexual activities going on there.

Here is what some of the IDPs said.

16 years old Fati tells her story :
“I lost both parents when they attacked our village in Bama. I was able to run away with my little brother before they packed the other girls and left. We trekked through the bush till we got to Maiduguri.

“I was admitted into the camp a year ago and since I do not have parents, I and my brother were attached to another family in a tent. There are so many girls in the camp and few men. The family I was living with advised me to find a man for myself that will marry me because Boko Haram had killed so many boys. I was only 16 and the competition was too much.

“I later got Sani but I never knew that he had so many women on the line. I refused to have sex with him initially but he threatened that he would leave me for another woman. This was why I started having sex with him. He promised to marry me as soon as we get out of the camp. He was not happy when he discovered that I was pregnant. He simply asked me to get out of his sight and go and find a husband for myself. I thank God for men of NEMA who have assisted us, I wish they will take the baby so that I will have an opportunity to go to school. I am an orphan and do not have anyone to assist me in life.”

The story of 17 years old Zara who became a 70 years old Alhaji's fourth wife.
“I was left with no choice but to marry Alhaji. I was even lucky that he has only three wives. This is not the life I dreamed of, but I pray that when we get back to Adamawa, we will be able to have a normal life. I hope he will allow me to go back to school because I want to become a teacher."

Mohammed, married to four wives shares his own story.
“I am grateful to God that I made it alive. I am married to four wives and would have taken more if my religion accepts it. My greatest concern is three of my daughters who are of age . Men are difficult to come by and the ones in the camp are full of deceit. Once in a while families will come from the city to pick wives for their children but my daughters are not lucky yet. The camp has turned into a brothel and the little girls you see around are all into it.  They have lost control and I wish that government will help us to keep them busy. We are simply praying to Allah (God) to help us so that we can return to our various homes.”

Mrs Halima's experience.
“It is bad over here. The elderly men are also guilty of getting our daughters pregnant. In fact, they are worse than the younger ones. Some of them have access to money and normally use it to woo these innocent girls. I can tell you that most of the pregnant women you see around here conceived while in this camp. Rape cases here is also high, it’s just that we prefer not to talk about it. The victims are mostly girls whose parents are not in the camp to protect them."

Fatima, a midwife confirms the stories.
“They are idle so it is natural that most of them seek pleasure among themselves. All we need is counsellors because the rate of pregnancies is very high in most of the camps that I have visited. They even give them condoms free of charge but every month we will get a new case of pregnant woman especially the under aged.”

EFCC keeping Metuh under inhuman conditions in underground cell - PDP

The People's Democratic Party, PDP on Saturday, cried out against the continued detention of its spokesman, Chief Olisa Metuh who was arrested on January 5,2015 by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

The PDP said that Metuh's continued detention without arraignment in court shows the dictatorial tendency of the Buhari administration.

In a statement signed by its National Legal Adviser, Barr. Victor Kwon, the PDP condemned Metuh's detention on the basis of a purported holding charge derived from a magistrate.

“We draw the attention of all Nigerians and the international community to this illegal clamp-down on the opposition spokesman by the EFCC, using a purported holding charge said to have been derived from a magistrate court.

“Holding Charge which implies ‘arrest before investigation’ instead of ‘investigation before arrest’ is clearly an aberration and abuse of judicial process which has since been declared by several courts as illegal, null and void, and of no effect as it is totally in contradiction with section 35 (1), (4), (5a) of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“The PDP is particularly worried that Chief Metuh, since his arrest on Tuesday, is being inhumanly kept in an underground cell where he is daily threatened by officials, who we gathered, have been mounting pressure on him to accept guilt of fictitious figures and implicate PDP leaders.

“The public is very much aware that the EFCC Chairman has visited the Presidential villa at least twice since Chief Metuh was arrested and detained by the commission, ostensibly to get further directives on the case.

“We invite the world to note that President Buhari’s election promise of fighting corruption has now been turned into a man-hunt of PDP leaders, while known corrupt APC leaders are being shielded by the system and rewarded with ministerial positions and other government appointments.

“Our nation is now being turned into a police state with its inherent constitutional violations and infringement on rights of citizens, a scenario which poses grave danger to national stability and survival of our democracy.

“The PDP strongly cautions against the avoidable tension and looming political crisis over the continuous clamp-down on our leaders and particularly, the continued incarceration of our spokesperson, Chief Olisa Metuh, who was arrested a few days after he confronted the Federal Government and the APC over their dictatorial pronouncements and actions.

“Our teeming members across the country have so far exercised reasonable restrain, but we caution that there is a limit to what they can stomach in the face of this brazen persecution of our spokesman. The President Buhari-led APC government and the EFCC should therefore hold themselves responsible should there be any breakdown of law and order in the land over this matter.

“We therefore reinforce our demand on the EFCC to respect the course of law and release Chief Metuh immediately or charge him to court in line with the provisions of our laws if it strongly feels it has a case against him.

“Nigerians cannot afford to return to the era of dictatorship where constitutional provisions, respect for lawful processes and personal freedom of citizens under the law are trampled upon. Their response to this might come with very dire consequences,” said the statement.

Boko Haram: Counter-insurgency troops to get death insurance

The Federal Government says that soldiers fighting insurgency in the Northeast are to get insurance coverage for their lives.

The Minister of Defence, retired Brig.-Gen. Mansur Dan-Ali made the disclosure to journalists on Friday after a special Jumaat service to mark the Armed Forces Remembrance Day in Abuja.

He said that the measure is in addition to other policies already in place for the soldiers' families.

“ Normally we have package for the families of the fallen heroes but recently we are introducing the death insurance which has not been done before.

“ It is an additional package by President Muhammadu Buhari to motivate our gallant armed forces and to take care of the families of the fallen heroes,“ he said.

While calling for the prayers and support of Nigerians, the Defence Minister assured that Boko Haram would soon be a thing of the past.

“ I believe Nigerians are fully aware of what the military has done so far and with their prayers everything will come to an end very soon, “ he said.

Army mistakenly attributes weapons recovered from bandits to Shiites

In the words of the Nigerian Army, all the weapons recovered from the Shiite sect during their bloody clash have been handed over to the police.

However, the Headquarters of 1 Division, Nigerian Army has drawn attention to a recent publication in which a particular photograph was erroneously displayed during a press conference by the General Officer Commanding, GOC 1 Division in Kaduna on January 6, 2016 with the view to correct the mistake in the caption.

In a press statement issued by the Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, Colonel Usman Abdul, the Army said ;

“We wish to state categorically that all the ammunitions/weapons and other dangerous weapons displayed were recovered from armed bandits, criminals and cattle rustlers that have been terrorizing innocent civil populace within the North West Zone and not from the members of the Shiite sect as reported.

“The issue of the clash between the Nigerian Army troops and members of the Shiite sect was not the main issue of the briefing but was only mentioned to reiterate the position of the Nigerian Army on the matter. All sort of weapons recovered specifically from the Shiite sect have been handed over the Police authority few days after the incident.”
