African Pilgrims Didn't Cause Hajj Stampede - NAHCON
The Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, NAHCON, has rejected the insinuations in certain quarters that the stampede which led to the death of over 700 pilgrims in Mina, near Mecca was triggered by African pilgrims.
Barrister Abdullahi Mukhtar said at a news conference in Mecca, Saudi Arabia that it is unfair for anyone to blame Africans taking part in the pilgrimage for the tragic incident.
His words :
“At this time of electronic age and the close circuit cameras installed in Mecca and environment, the authorities can easily know how the stampede started and what caused it."
He however urged the pilgrims to abide by the time tables provided by the Saudi authorities to forestall a reoccurrence of the ugly incident.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, three Nigerians have been confirmed to be among those who died in the stampede.
