Fight Against Corruption Battle For Nigeria's Soul And Substance

President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday told the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria that the war against corruption is a battle for the soul and substance of Nigeria.

This was conveyed in a good will message he sent to the meeting of the CBCN holding at Igwuruta, near Portharcourt, Rivers State. He was represented by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

President Buhari said that corruption has become so entrenched that it now constitutes a parallel system. He cited corruption as the reason for bad policies and brazen theft of public resources.

“Corruption in our country is so endemic that it constitutes a parallel system. It is the primary reason for poor policy choices, waste and of course bare- faced theft of public resources.“Our fight against corruption is not just a moral battle for virtue and righteousness in our land, it is a fight for the soul and substance of our nation.”

Buhari went on to attribute such national problems as unemployment, infant and maternal mortality and deaths from preventable diseases to the corruption and greed of a privileged few.

Frightened Boko Haram Fighters Surrender To Troops

Panic stricken militants have been surrendering to the front line troops in the Northeast following sustained air and ground offensives by the Nigerian military.

Army spokesperson, Col Sani Usman said that more and more militants are indicating willingness to surrender.

He said in a statement that the army has adopted strategies to
“constrict and snuff out the Boko Haram terrorists from their hideouts. Many of the terrorists that willingly surrendered painted images of mass panic and hysteria among their erstwhile colleagues.

“They said their colleagues are feeling the noose tightening on their necks with the relentless efforts of troops and renewed vigour in the operations inspired by the personal leadership of the Chief of Army Staff.

“Terrorists also seem to have an inkling of what happens to surrendered suspects as regards screening and de-radicalization of innocent ones among them."

He said that the Nigerian Armed Forces would continue to evolve effective strategies to bring the insurgency to a quick end.
